New medicine chest
New medicine chest
Remodeling help please...... Does anyone know... In an old apartment, the standard cheap metal medicine chest... Can you simply, somehow, just unscrew it from the wall, and replace it? It sort of sits in the wall. They have the replacements at lowes. They are 11.00. But I cant figure out, looking at the old one, how you get it out of the wall. I would spring for a better one, but I think only the standard one fits in the hole in the wall. The only reason Im bothering to replace it, is because the mirror part looks like crap.

Is it set into the wall, or screwed to it?
Whichever, make sure you tape the mirror so it won't shatter if you accidentally break it.
If the cabinet is set into the wall:
Instructions
Score the area around the old cabinet where the frame meets the wall using a utility knife. Using a prybar and hammer, gently tap and pry the old medicine cabinet away from the framing.
Before removing the cabinet, tape off the mirror with masking tape so the glass won't break upon removal.
Open the cabinet and use the prybar to loosen the cabinet from the interior. Measure the distance in width and length to determine your new cabinet size.
Insert your new medicine cabinet and secure it with the provided screws. If necessary, you may use the shims to insure a secure fit.~~~~~~~~~~~~
If it's just set on the wall, you should be able to take any screws out and pry it off. It may be glued or it may be stuck to the paint.

Thank you acc.. It definately is in a square in the wall. I did have another thought this morning... Could I buy the new chest.... take off the mirror, and simply replace the mirror? Or could I glue the new mirror to the old mirror?

Those mirrors are usually glued or welded to the cabinet, so you probably can't replace it. Gluing a new mirror on top is feasible.
Another option might be to remove the old door and hang a larger mirror over the hole. One with a nice frame or something. Nobody will even know there's a cabinet there except for you.
