Lemme see if I get this -- Auntie EU has decided that ya'll aren't smart enough to regulate your own vitamin input? That's what politicians do once given power. They find things to do so they can say "Lookey what I did for you. Vote for me!" Natural consequences for decisions made, if you ask me.
Now, is the complaint that they will have to take multiple pills to get the same mega-dose they used to get in a single pill? Heaven forbid!
It's already virtually impossible to buy an effective strength Vitamin D3 formulation in the UK. I have to buy mine from the USA.
We have got to get the message across that the natural amount of a vitamin/supplement the body would NATURALLY acquire given regular limited exposure to sunshine or from dietary sources is a level that the body evolved to deal with.
It is simply a scam to say that amounts of Vitamiin D3 over 2000iu are potentially unsafe when we know given a full days sun exposure the skin makes 50,000iu or 10 minutes in a tanning bed produces 15,000iu. The body actually uses between 3000iu and 5000iu daily, so only some totally stupid or corrupt would try to con people that 2000iu/d is unsafe.
Risk assessment for vitamin D -- Hathcock et al. 85 (1): 6 ... provides the research if anyone doubts me. I appreciate it may be hard for many people to get their heads round the idea that all doctors are for the most part simply the pawns of Big Pharma but the fact is in the UK doctors prescribe Vitamin D2 Ergocalciferol even though it is less effective more expensive and may not be used at all by some elderly people. The case against ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) as a vitamin ... Cholecalciferol D3 is available (albeit from the USA) for a fraction of the price. I pay 5p for 5000iu £13 for 250 x 5000iu. Now ask yourselves why, when their is no evidence to support the use of D2 over D3 do doctors only prescribe the less effective more expensive product.
Why isn't Cholecalciferol D3 available on prescription in the UK?
Because our health professionals are weak corrupt or stupid is the most reasonable explaination though I'm willing to listen to other suggestions.

You can't take a double-dose?? I'm sorry, I just don't get the outrage -- not when there's none against the EU in general. Ya'll decided to add yet another layer of government bureaucracy to your perfectly adequate governments. What did you expect would happen?

What did you expect would happen?I'm afraid this is not the politicians driving this but big pharma. The more big pharma can control the supplement industry the more illness they can create to boost the market for their Allopathic medicine.

Try finding a committee on health matters in the USA - UK - EU that isn't stuffed with consultants representing the best interests of big pharma?
