I'm sorry Guppy. Firefox is another browser, like Internet Explorer or Netscape.
You can get it free from www.mozilla.com. I used to use Netscape but it wouldn't work on my new computer so I was using IE which I don't like. I am very happy with Firefox, it's fast and efficient and has a ton of gizmos you can add on if you choose.

Oh you're not blonde (well maybe you are really blonde haired but you know what I mean) lots of people don't realize you can change browsers. I didn't know that for a long time myself. And I'm learning new stuff all the time still.

In what way is IE still working in the background, rj? Do you mean that other programs can access the Internet because the Internet access libraries are available regardless of whether IE is running?
Some viruses get into Microsoft systems when they're not full up to date with their security patches. The same's true of Linux systems with open ports where security updates haven't been applied.

No software is calling out through IE that doesn't have to get explicit manual permission under its own name to do so if you have a two-way firewall like Zone Alarm running, whether you run with Administrator privileges or not.

I've written Linux utilities which connect to the Internet without asking permission of the user. A Microsoft equivalent utility doing that would pop up a request for permission under Zone Alarm. Ubuntu gives no such indication.
Why would I write them that way, you ask? It lets me track how many copies of my utilities are in use worldwide and which registration key they're running under. I can trigger various actions from my server end aimed at specified IPs, if they continue to be run without proper licensing. I can, for example, tell my utility to lie or to delete user files. That's why a machine with Zone Alarm two-way firewall capabilities is so necessary and I don't think Ubuntu implements that functionality.
"if you trust 'zone alarm'" sounds very paranoid.
