Libraries: a cave where genius abides
If you find no library card in your wallet or purse you are not a self-learner. You are at best a dilettante, a dabbler in knowledge.
A self-learner has a multitude of clamoring questions, in a multitude of domains of knowledge, seeking answers. To discover the nature of reality and the answers to these questions one must have access to a library of books.
Most colleges have a ‘Friend of the Library’ card, which, for a small annual fee, will allow anyone to borrow books from that library.
After schooling is over the experience of learning begins. I think that the first step toward becoming a self-actualizing self-learner is to acquire at least one library card.
Public libraries are not just for kids on field trips.
Public libraries are so much more than a book storage facility.
Public libraries are places where people from all walks of life are welcome.
Public libraries are wonder-filled places where people of ignorance can find genius, a place where the homeless can find shelter and where the educated can find inspiration.
Public libraries smell like knowledge and taste like wisdom.
Public libraries are truly beautiful from the inside out.
Visiting public libraries often and for long periods of time is a modern form of respecting our elders.
Humanity is summed up in the content of the written word which can be found in a public library near you.
To study the masters from within a public library is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience for some people.
The line I used to entice my girlfriend into becoming my wife; "My library card has recently been renewed."

Libraries: a cave where genius abides
Wow, this is a Coberst post I can actually respond to! This is a treat for me.
I agree with everything said...very much so. I have always loved the library. As a kid books were sometimes my only friends, a way of escaping, and certainly the main reason I know the things I do.
In my wallet:
No library card! (Because mine is one of those tiny ones attached to my keyring)
I own cards for two libraries.
receipts from groceries and shopping
club cards
store cards
photo of best friend
credit card
bank cards
address of good friend
florist receipt from special occasion (souvenir)
a dollar bill
checkbook
change
The library in my opinion is one of our greatest institutions. Where else can you get knowledge for free?

There's no library card in my wallet. It's stuck in the visor in my car for easy access along with my gas card.

I love libraries too. I'm not especially fond of most of the librarians I've dealt with. Some have been helpful, but not most. I don't think there are enough of them due to city budget cuts and the like and they get bogged down in too much clerical stuff. Maybe they figure their computerized system is a standin for real service.
Thing I don't understand is why if I spend too much time in a library or bookstore for that matter do I get hassled by family etc and made to feel like I'm doing something wrong me. Of course noone can make me feel any particular way, but you get the idea. Is it so wrong to hang out in a library all day?

I have noticed unhappy librarians too, especially at the city library. My gosh, ask them for help and they act like it's a big imposition and it's even worse if they have to get out of their chair.
I also think people *can* make you feel a certain way (apparently it's peculiar to America that someone can't) but I am pretty much alone in that opinion. Some people unless they have their own appreciation for the library, can't see why we'd want to hang around a bunch of old books all day. For the rest of us that's nirvana.

I agree.
