Hitler's Alpine Playground

Post by capt_buzzard »

Raising out of the mist amid some of the most sublime alpine scenery in Europe, a spa hotel built on the site of Adolf Hitler's mountain eyrie hopes to exorcise the ghost of the Nazi leader.

The InterContinental Resort Berchtesgaden, on the 5,000ft Obersalzberg mountain where the Nazi leadership spent their retreats, is due to open soon as a unique playground for the world's rich and famous.

The 138-room complex with suites for more than $ 2,500 and a spectacular panorama of mountains and lakes, is perched on the hill where Hermann Goring lived, and just a short walk from the Berghof, where Hitler holidayed with his girlfriend Eva Bruan.

Hell fell in love with the area when he vitited it to write the second volume of 'Mein Kampf'. Later it effectively became the Nazi's second seat of government after Berlin. Years were spent deliberating what to do with such historically loaded terrain.

In recognition that this is a hotel with a difference, all staff are being schooled in the history of Obersalzberg, so that they are ready to answer guests questions.

But, unsurprisingly, the management is keener to stress the hotel's modern attributes, its high tech ski lifts and spa treatments.

The ''puristic'' architecture of teak floors, walls of bare stone and marble. The innocence of its English tea lounge and rosemary scented scones, are all attempts at making your stay very relaxing.
