Unusual Ice Cream Flavours

Who here makes their own ice cream? Some of the latest ice cream makers are actually quite handy and you can have fresh ice cream in about twenty minutes or so.

Let's see... I recently had an ice cream social where we had corn, caramelized onion with balsamic vinegar, avocado, adzuki bean, lemon, chocolate chunk and jalapeño, port, grapefruit, beer... (Guinness wasn't to bad for this one, believe it or not), wasabi, rose, lavender (that's not so weird... one of the first flavours I ever had as a child, in fact), cucumber, cantaloupe... and whatever flavours and combinations of flavours that party goers brought along with them to try.

What are some of the most unusual ice cream flavours that you've made?

I've never made my own ice cream, but I know that a top seller at the Gilroy Garlic festival (California) is garlic ice cream.

I wouldn't mind trying that cantaloupe ice cream you mentioned! :)

I've wanted to try that, actually... some friends of mine have told me it wasn't as bad as they'd expected it to be.

Ben and Jerry's actually make cantaloupe ice cream, but they never figured out how to do it in a commercial sized batch... the only place they sell it is in their downtown store. But they do provide the recipe they use for their small batches they sell there, however.

Ben & Jerry's Cantaloupe Ice Cream

Ingredients:

1 large cantaloupe (very ripe)

Juice of 1 lemon

*Sweet cream base (see below)

Directions:

Cut the cantaloupe in half and clean out the seeds.

Scoop the fruit into a mixing bowl, add the lemon juice, and mash until the fruit is purred.

Drain the juice into another bowl and reserve.

Cover the melon puree and refrigerate.

Prepare the sweet cream base and whisk in the fruit juice.

Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze following the manufacturer's instructions.

After the ice cream stiffens, about 2 minutes before it is done, add the cantaloupe.

if more juice has accumulated, do not pour it in because it will water down the ice cream.

Continue freezing until the ice cream is ready.

Makes 1 generous quart.

B & J's Sweet Cream Base #1

Yield: 1 servings

2 lg Eggs

3/4 c Sugar

2 c Heavy or whipping cream

1 c Milk

This is Ben and Jerry's most popular base, has creamy texture, medium

body, and a subtle, understated taste. It's especially good as a

background for fruit, cookies and candy. Whisk the eggs in a mixing

bowl until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the sugar, a

little at a time, then continue to whisk until completely blended,

about 1 minute more. Pour in the cream and milk and whisk to blend.

Makes 1 quart.

It's well worth the investment, in my opinion... and Cuisinart makes a nice one for around $50... but I've seen them for less than that on sale. If you make a lot of different flavours, I'd recommend getting an extra freezer bowl... it takes a good day for the freezer bowl to freeze and you can't clean it whilst it's super cold, either. If not, you can sometimes get by with making vanilla first then mixing up another flavoured batch afterwards without completely cleaning it. If it's cool enough inside you might get away with it a time or two, before the freezer bowl thaws out.

I've actually tried a few brands and there was one or two that were really terrible... one was a brand called Rival for $20. Anyway, I couldn't even use it, despite the clumsiness of the design, and had to return it. KitchenAid also makes an attachment for their blender, but... it's a bit more expensive than the stand alone ice cream maker. Oh, and the balls are cool, too... you can get one of those for $20 to $30 but they require a bit of energy... but the kids love rolling them... that is until they eventually get bored. :p

I love all of those flavours... and fresh Georgia peaches in season... I almost made some peach/ginger ice cream tonight... instead I sliced and pitted a peach and made vanilla ice cream with chopped up dried ginger and scooped it into the pitted peaches. Delicious.

I paid $29 for my Cuisinart... so you can find them on sale... I just checked and saw one place had that one for $36... and the lowest price I saw online for the ball was $19. Do some research certainly, though... I know there are a lot of brands that make electric ice cream makers now.

The great thing about the ball, is that it doesn't use electricity, will burn up a few extra calories, if you're concerned about such things, plus you'll get a slight workout and ... possibly improve coordination, I suppose. :wah:

So I understand Guinness ice cream is good. Yep I have been tossing around the idea of an ice cream maker of sorts too. If you ever watch the iron chef on TV, they make some very unusual ice creams on that. Oiy I swear there has been some sorts of "fish" ice cream. I guess ice cream doesn't always have to be sweet.

i think i might have to get an Ice cream maker, i have never thought about the different flavours, and i could make them to my own liking how cool.

the most different ice cream i have tried is Liquorice ice cream,

ooh and double chocolate with hot chocolate, it hardens in like a cone on top, very weird but very scrummy :p:D
