Jesse Jackson to target oil companies on diversity Tue May 1, 3:46 PM ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - U.S. activist Rev. Jesse Jackson on Tuesday said his organization will target top energy companies like Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips in a push to create more jobs for women and minorities in the industry.

Jackson said members of his Rainbow PUSH Coalition plan to buy stock in 20 of the world's largest energy companies. As investors, the group will seek change by attending annual meetings, calling for talks with the companies' chief executives and pressing for fairness hearings at the state level.

"We intend to inject ourselves into the struggle for fair access to energy," Jackson told a news conference. "Historically, we've not had that access."

Minorities have been underrepresented in all parts of the energy sector in the United States and are largely relegated to the role of consumer, Jackson said.

He did not offer statistics but described minority representation in the industry as "very low."

As part of its efforts, Rainbow PUSH will examine the racial make-up of a company's board of directors, its suppliers, its consultants, its contractors and its outside legal firms, Jackson said.

Representatives for Exxon and ConocoPhillips did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

On Monday, Jackson said he met with John Hofmeister, president of Royal Dutch Shell Plc's Shell Oil Co. U.S. unit, and described the meeting as very good.

Jackson's comments on diversity come as the energy industry is gathered in Houston for the 65,000-person Offshore Technology Conference.

Ah ethical investing. Actually it's a strong movement in Europe which is perhaps one of the reasons shell were open to listening. A boycott of their petrol stations over their dumping of a contaminated oil rig in the open sea a few years ago had them backing down and changing their method of disposal. Now European companies are a bit more careful about how they are perceived by the public.

Why is it OK for a rich man or a group of investors to invest in a company and take an interest in how the company is run, or for a company to invest in politicians and take an interest in how the country is run, but it's not OK for a group of concerned citizens to invest in a company and take an interest in how it goes about it's business?

What bothers you about this exactly? Is it the fact that anyone can invest in a company and with enough shares influence the board of directors, or even change them to one of their liking, or is it you just think only certain people should be allowed to invest? It's a free market economy after all you can buy shares in oil companies as well if you want to.

What I do know is I live in a sm town miles from a larger one. Most of the people here are very poor. I am not one of them but gas is $3.47 for plus here. My heart goes out to them, oil stoves are the main way to heat homes here.
