Hey Gang :)

I'm hooked on a show called "Intervention" on A&E. It's a documentary type of show about addiction -- and it eventually leads up to an intervention by family and friends. I've seen alcoholics, heroin addicts, pain medication addicts and a bulimic.

Why do I find this show so incredibly fascinating? :-3 :-6

i like these shows too but for an entirely different reason....what i am watching is the pain and anguish on the friends and family that care about the addict/alchoholic.

i notice how the a/a shows no remorse.

and i hear the stories of how the family allowed and keep allowing the a/a to keep running over/abusing the situation....

about the only thing i ever see that seems to help both sides is for the family and friends to cut all ties...and let the a/a fall flat on their ass..

Not everyone has the financial ability to go to a good shrink. No, it shouldn't be such a public spectacle but a) those people chose to participate and b) the show could possibly help a viewer recognize signs they had previously been oblivious to.

I consider myself pretty intuitive and am able to spot certain tendencies that red-flag me to know something is not right. I accredit that ability to a variety of things: a stable home-life, lots of mentors, psych classes, my own addictions, and experiencing the wrath of others' addictions.

I totally agree with you af...if you are born and raised in a healthy environment ..all the more power to that person but the sad fact is...many are not.......this show is a good representation of far too many homes in america.....

I think any of the reality shows are a hit because we really like feeling as if we are peeping into the private lives of others. And sometimes it makes us feel as if our problems are not so bad.

I have heard about this show, but have never seen it. There is another show, on HBO called Addiction.

aaaaaaaah, but af you and i see the definition of "sick" two different ways....i see the side of the enablers ...the boundrieless people who alllow the a/a to totally screw their worlds up because they either werent taught as kids or just absolutely dont have a clue what a healthy boundry is....showing love and compassion for an addict does NOT mean....allowing them to take precendence over your own happiness..it does not mean putting their wants and needs ahead of your own....it does not mean allowing yourself to be a victim.....it does not mean letting the a/a blame criticise or take their addiction out on you......../// it does NOT mean that you, should allow them to steal. borrow ...anything from you without making them pay the price...ie; jail...../

the only thing i am saying at this time in my life ..i am learning to have healthy boundries and they are still young and in order not to go back to my old sick ways i have to avoid the a/a s at all costs at this time.....for me

I feel blaming your childhood or what you've been through in order to justify your actions is a load of b.s. Everyone has the ability to choose to, or not to, be a productive member of society. Not all are concerned with that factor. Just look at all the freeloaders that just want to slide by on other's accomplishments.

i so totally agree with you here....blaming is just another cop out for not taking responsiblity for personal choices.....

i know..i did it for years....i blamed the alchoholic for my unhappiness..when in reality i had the choice the whole time to leave or stay......:) i still remember my first visit to alanon...still thinking he was the problem and not me.....i still thought i could do something anything to stop him and make him see the light.....eventually it was me that saw the light....and decided to go play in the sun.....:-6

I hated Alanon because they would say that we were sick too.

But then... years up the road... you hear yourself yelling and screaming, or acting weird and withdrawn... and you realize, you have become sick.

I wouldnt be able to name one thing that made me see the light. There were so many horriffic and horrible incidences.. I would be hard pressed to choose the most memorable. I do remember this... Around the time I began wishing my problem was dead, an alanon group leader said to me.. " Weeder, the prisons are filled with partners of substance abusers. Pushed to their limit, these are the people who committ the crime. " Once out of the tunnell, it is impossible to believe that you ever lived that way.

Oh I hear you on this one :)

When I think back 20 years ago to when I was in a physically abusive relationship, it's *still* hard to believe I put up with that @#$%^&*!! for many months.

I think it helps to see yourself as an ever-changing entity, one who makes mistakes and grows and learns from them (hopefully). This helped me to stop bashing myself :-6 :)
