welcome to worksop ( the victor meldrew column )

Post by panto andy »

hello and welcome back to the victor meldrew column.

did you have a good crimbo ? i did i was working on xmas eve till 10pm ( rather have the money) and so to the column well i couldn't find anything to write about so just for a change i'll write about the little dump sorry town that i live in.

welcome to worksop a small town in nottinghamshire not to far from robin hoods sherwood forest inhabited by druggies professional shoplifters and a large smattering of poles turks kurds etc who work at the sandwich factory 7 days a week for pittance.

add to this obnoxious brew more pubs and takeaways than we need with a new takeaway opening every week ( i jest not ) and that gives you some idea of the kind of hellhole worksop is.

the latest blow to the local economy was the closure of vesuvius this week and soon dormer tools will join the ranks of factories being closed down and turned in to housing estates.

we used to have many employers here in worksop manton hoisery, bairns wear ,vesuvius, dormer tools and many collierys now unfortunatley consigned to the past.

we do have some employers left in worksop wilkinson depot, greencore sandwich factory and a new one b&q depot built on the old manton colliery site theres even a tesco and sainsbury store here but unfortunatly for evey job thats advertised theres 100 applicants for the job.

shopping wise ? sorry no marks and sparks here or big department stores they abandoned worksop years ago everyone goes to meadowhell for that.

we dont even have a co op department store they left a few years ago.

no cinema or bowling alley although we do have a lesiure centre when its not closed for repairs although it does close by 5pm even at weekends and the doorstep milk deliveries come from mansfield with the milkmen doing two or three village rounds. although the councils latest iniative is to extend the priory shopping centre which comprises of two rows of shop units and try and tempt a few big names back to worksop.

so next time you're heading up the A1 or M1 and you see a sign for worksop and you're looking for an exiting days shopping or lesiure cross us off your list and try doncaster or sheffield instead.
