i am seriously thinking of getting a smoked turkey and spiral-cut ham for Christmas. i only expect my two sons, i have spent years doing a huge traditional feast, which i just did for Thanksgiving. it was always a labor of love, but labor it is, lots of it! has anyone ever tried this, and how did it turn out? .... (uh.....do you serve smoked turkey cold?) the thought of this almost seems sacreligious to me, and yet is becoming more appealing by the hour!

I' ve never done smoked turkey but one year when there was only three of us we did the rolled boned stuffed turkey. I don't know if you have Aldi in the states but they do a lovely one and it's not expensive either. Plenty for 3 people.

The smoked turkeys are actually quite good. You can simply put it in the oven to warm it up, and I love spiral ham. Just because you're taking a shortcut doesn't mean you're lessening the experience. It shouldn't be all about cooking anyway

Take the shortcut and enjoy the extra time with your family!

Rick and I buy smoked turkeys often. Yes, you heat them through...don't stuff them. Then I do up the works..potatoes, gravy, veggies. I personally prefer the taste of the turkey heated, but it can be eaten either way. Just heat it through the first time.

It is not sacreligious! It's Christmas for you, too, and why dread it? As long as there's plenty to eat, you've no need to feel guilty.

Smoked turkey makes WONDERFUL left-overs....in pasta, salads, enchiladas...well, you'll see!

Christmas Nosh.. ahhhhhhh

I've never tried smoked turkey.. It's gonna be the full English style traditional feast in this house.. grin... Baked turkey, with apricot and macadamia stuffing, gravy, brussels sprouts, bread sauce, baked vegetables,.. washed down with sparkling burgundy, and followed by plum pudding and brandy sauce. We don't have ham with the main meal. I buy a smoked shoulder and we graze on that on Christmas morning, along with champagne and summer fruit.

Christmas Eve, round about 2am, after Midnight Mass we all gather and eat mince pies and drink sherry wine, then sleep in !!!

Anyway, that's the food side of my Chrissie.

Very interesting to see how others do it.

Of course, my way is more English than Australian. Aussies tend to have a barbie or eat cold seafood on the beach.

The French have their main meal in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve.. Le Reveillon!!

i've always done the traditional prime rib and yorkshire pud, but now i find only one son can come...so i'm fine with the smoked turkey this time. i may be sorry, we'll see. :-3

Oh my God Linda!! That is my exact menu. Im having 4 people for dinner. My dad, my younger son, a friend and myself. I always loved to cook... but the marathon slaving days are over. i got a spiral ham and a small ( very small turkey breast. Brian doesnt eat ham. The menu: Ham, sweet potatoes.. turkey.. a fresh green veggie... salad, dinner rolls.. Wine. cranberry sauce. Im sick of pies and cakes. Im going to make chocolate mousse. And Voila that is it.

The younger son is living with me...... supposedly temporarily. Before dad and my friend coming, I figured i would be alone as son is very tempremental.

Im sure he will come out of his room long enough to eat though....

i can relate Weeder! they will appear for food! :rolleyes: ....anyone ever send or receive gift baskets? i had one sent to me today, it is lovely! it contained gourmet chocolates, cheese, two bottles of napa valley wine, cashews, and lots of other nice goodies.

well i can report that the smoked turkey :yh_chickn was yucky. it tasted 'off' to me...i won't do THAT again!
