I always try to remember that people who do things like that are truly sick in their minds. Think about it honestly.....you are sane, we are sane, we would not even think of doing such a thing, let alone actually doing it. People who do these things are not in their right minds, they are not sane, they are sick. And yes, reading about that sort of thing makes me sick. But I am made aware of how fortunate I am that I am sane. We don't do anything to be sane....we are blessed with it. They don't do anything to be sick/insane.....I don't know that they are blessed with it but they are stuck with it.

Wait a second. Let me wipe off my screen because Im not sure I am reading this right. Are you people seriously making excuses for these people? Did the following have excuses when they murdered their victims?

Not an excuse, in that, it is OK, they were mentally ill...but in the case of Andrea Yates, and apparently this lady...PPD is definatly a mental illness which needs to be treated. Not saying what they did to thier children was right...but the people around them are just as at fault for not seeing thay there may be a problem, and getting the children away from them till they recieved the proper help.

Maybe they would never have gotten the kids back...but giving them the mental help they needed may have saved the children.

It is all situational, I think.

i have looked evil in the eyes. many times. i am tired of defense rhetoric. evil does exist on this earth. postpartum or not. i recognize mental illness, but godammn it i have seen too many calculated killers, whose only motivation was selfish, not 'cause the devil told them to do it. ...and i sure as hell don't want to see a bunch of googled pseudo-intellectual crap about it. i know what i've seen. when someone can tell me they have known as many killers as i have i might listen.

And let me add, if you want to google some bullcrap, try googling crime library and get the details on what these monsters did to their victims. One springs out: Cutting off the victim's head and putting it on her bookcase like some kind of sicko trophy or something while her nude body lies hunched over on the bed.

Andrea Yates was mentally ill, I'll give that one up. But Susan Smith is a cold blooded killer. Anyone who kills their kids to keep a man is just downright evil!

I'm ummm emotional today...gonna go find a happy thread....

Diagnosing someone insane and not responsible is not excusing them - neither is it the easy option for them. Here, it changes the sentence from an average of 7 years served (laughable) to "At Her Mejesty's Pleasure" which is often life.

Of our worst recent murder cases, Ian Brady (the Moors Murderer) and Peter Sutcliffe (the Yorkshire Ripper) are both in a secure mental institution and are very unlikely to ever be released.

Susan Smith was definatly nuts...which is a far cry from mental illness. I agree with Sheryl....to kill your kids in order to keep a man is senseless. I do not have kids...but if I did I would never kill them in order to keep a man around. No man is worth that.

And not all people who kill thier kids are mentally ill. But it is definatly an option to be looked into.

That is my say.

It's not making excuses. It is seeing reality. I think that what these people do is horrid and they have to pay the price. I don't get any kick or joy out of wishing vile things on them. That would make me almost as bad as them.

I couldn't find a definition for legal insanity so I assume that you mean that legal insanity is just a farce, not real, just a lie to get people off the hook. In which case our legal system is just a farce and the crooks are free.

no. it's not a farce. i am simply tired of the routine psyche defense which is usually bollocks. legal insanity means the person did not know right from wrong when the act was committed.

To live in the same city as these people makes you realize just how anything can happen anywhere. I knew this place was bad, but I have to say, I've never heard of anything as vile as this, let alone living around it.

I thought that when a person was found not guilty because of insanity, that they had to go to a mental institution. If the because of insanity clause they just walk totally free, then our legal system is nothing but a farce.

if they are found guilty but insane they go off to the looney bin. but if some shrink decides the mass killer is OK after a few years, they walk.

I don't really think it's that easy to fake being insane. The defendant would get thorough psychiatric evaluations while on trial, and I don't see very many doctors having much sympathy for killers, sane or not. I like many have some discrepancies about leniency in the judicial system, but I'm far from cynical when it comes to getting these dirtbags off the street. Having them stay off the street is another thing. The problem has nothing to do with the judiciary system, its the legislation that lets these people free after the court does it's job.

Well I guess I'll keep living my motto and live my life without fear, with a reasonable amount of caution. Course, living in a small town makes that easy to say.:guitarist

Some people should be sterilized. This woman is one of them. She might be insane....she might be evil...whichever adjective you use works for me, as long as STERILE is added to the list.
