There are as many forms of prostitution as there are women, I suppose. In Nevada, where it's legal and carefully regulated, young women make college tuition money as prostitutes, for example. In other venues, addicts are using their bodies to support drug habits. I don't think we can safely generalize.

Is it the actual act which repels you? Or the fact that women are using their sexuality to make money? For example....telephone sex workers...do THEY make you sad? Or women who work in those rooms where men watch them strip? What about lap dancers?
There are many forms of sexual work.
I agree that it's a shame when women use prostituion as a last resort, but I don't agree that it's always shameful.

I don't think anyone should hold the choices of a few to be an expression for the majority. Quite simply it's their choice, and to say that this reflects upon females in general is wrong. There are plenty of guy prostitutes who piddle down the hershey highway of darkness, but I hardly see that as a statement on behalf of myself or anyone else who happens to be a male. Nothing more than exactly what it is, and that is purely perception.

Street hookers who *have* to make money that way are one thing. Sad yes. And kids turning tricks to be able to live are also sad.
People who do it for their next fix are pathetic. That's not the same as sad.
As for prostitution because you like that life (some do, such as the Bunny Ranch in Nevada) or you want to earn big and fast money, to me, is different.
I couldn't do it myself but I won't fault a "clean" prostitute. I figure women have traded sex for keep for millennia. Why not get paid.
And quirky as it may be, I have a fascination for American prostitutes of the Old West. They gave a service for pay. I see nothing actually wrong with that, but again, I couldn't do it because I equate sex with love and doing a stranger, who may be disgusting to me, is not my bag.

I've met several over the years that are happy and properous in their chosen profession. They have funneled monies into various investments and looking forward to early retirement. Some has ventured into different businesses, and have done well.
But like so many society approved ventures some have fallen/failed.
I don't feel it's a disgrace............it's just a choice.

I have met a few too and talked to them about it. I had a hard time believing some could actually be making money at it. But some very hard working at the job. One taxi driver told me he took one home to the rich part of town every night. I feel they do a service. If a man was not married and could not or would not chase girls and play the game then his choices are limited. He could go grab a girl and rape her or take care of himself or hire a woman who chooses to make her living at it. I do know a person takes a chance of getting robbed or worse if he meets the wrong one. And here in my town they have John TV. The law puts the man on tv if he is caught soliciting. I can see it causing trouble at home if he is married. I think that is one more thing they do is the things the wife will not do.

John TV? Grr. I don't like those stings. I do dislike the idea of a committed man using a prostitute and secretly hope he comes back diseased but other than that, I think it's everyone's personal business.
True about the danger. It's dangerous for the prostitute too though. I Probably not as dangerous in the Bunny Ranches but definitely when no one's looking out.

Not all of it is a choice. The 13 year olds out there (for instance) may have had a bad home life and chosen to run away, but to be approached by a pimp and forced to hook is Not their choice. Same goes for boys. They run away and get caught up in street life. They learn how to do it for money.
Most of these kids feel stuck. And they're told by others that their families wouldn't take them back and that this is their life now. They feel they can't go home. And if the home life was bad in the 1st place, what then? Stuck.
As for the Nevada prostitutes who do it for tuition etc.... that Is a choice and IMO it's disgusting.
All in all, prostitution is a sad state of affairs.

Well, you cant expect someone to NOT do it because you guys all have morals. Its just like abortion. Its their body, let them make the choice. As for the children who are hooking, I imagine that is what truancy officers, police, and foster homes are for. To get them off the street and in school where they can get the resources to make choices.

i have to agree with Glitter. women who choose the oldest profession in the world are fine with me. Like the ladies at the Bunny Ranch in Nevada.
but those who are in it because they need a fix... nope.
and those who are Forced into it are in a category all by themselves.

Women - adult women, not children - choose prostitution. It's their right. The consequences of that choice is their responsibility ... including the consequence of being judged.
Me? I say legalize it.

In a decent brothel, as Lulu says, like some in Nevada, they get paid a decent wage, and they undergo regular health checks which -correct me if I'm wrong someone- I think are covered by the brothel. I'm sure they adjust for that with their pay scale, but no good brothel wants sick women. Bad for business.
There are also "escort services" (but we all know what that means) who pay a good wage.
On the other hand, a basic street hooker is not going to make decent pay. Her pimp/pimpess takes most of the cut. Add drugs into this and she's making enough to go from fix to fix.

And of course there's a Wikipedia article too:

I only have a little knowledge of Nevada brothels because I live about two hours from Las Vegas. I don't know what the laws are anywhere else.

I guess that differentiates from the trannies, she-males, drag queens and hermaphrodites working the streets.

I hope my menfolk would have no need to visit other women, paid or not.
The local brothels are in three parts.. the front is usually a marital aids shop, the middle bit a peep show scenario, and the back the brothel proper. There are regulations where such premises can be situated and they have to keep their act clean - health checks, no underage or illegal immigrant workers, no drugs or rowdiness. This all keeps organised crime out. I've talked to some of the girls on their break and they seem just like any other people taking a break.
Personally I wouldn't wish to earn my living this way. I'm choosy about who I sleep with, but I don't feel it's any of my business to judge others. And they might also feel squeamish about the fact I earned my living for many years spinning words for politicians. There are many forms of prostitution, after all. Sell your body, sell your other talents ...
There are non-female prostitues too. In the newspapers here it is legal to advertise - as long as you are an adult. I understand many women also avail themselves of the male 'escort' services on offer. I'm speaking of willing adults here, not kids, druggies or street solicitors.
Prostitution is ancient. Maybe, in an ideal world, it would not exist. And maybe it isn't the best way to live. For some reason, the Christian church in particular has mostly been loads more morally appalled by sexual 'sins' than by meanness, arrogance, spitefulness, dishonesty, betrayal of friends etc etc...

I agree that they shouldn't, but every adult has an inalienable right to be stupid, imo. I'll do my best to try to convince them not to act stupid, but I'm against laws that protect the stupid from themselves.

If a woman acts like a prostitute she'll be treated like one.
I had a conversation with a woman who had been "dating" a man who I was living with and left recently. I found out that he'd been paying for her to stay in a motel for 1 or 2 nights out of the week. I was so shocked. And when I asked her if she had been having sex with him her answer was "yes". And I inquired further about money and such and she said just as plain as day "oh he always paid for everything". It just sounded so dirty, as if she was a hooker. And since I didn't know about her past, I could assume that maybe at one time in her life she may have been. Considering that he was paying for her to be at a motel near where we lived. And it was in the section of town near the prostitution area where there were lots of motels and hotels and tourists. She'd been doing this with him for 6 years she told me.
Not for me.

On the contrary, I'm quite sure one can, and I'm sure that applies equally to both male and female sex workers. If the profession were less obliged to hide from the revenue system because of either stigma or legal restrictions there would be fewer abusive pimps living high on the proceeds, too. Like other jobs there's the skilled, the semi-skilled, the labourers and the no-hopers. I'd much rather self-respect were attached to those categories than to the nature of the work. I suspect that in many quarters it probably is, and a good thing too.
I see it more as a last bastion of class distinction, this prejudice. People don't pay so much attention to aristocratic breeding, or to inherited wealth, or to vocational calling, or to office over shop-floor, but they still look down their noses at personal service.

Prostitution, well, aside from the morality of selling sexual favours for solid material gain or financial security, (and of course only professional prostitutes would ever countenance such ideas, hmmmmn?), sorry to sound so cynical, but.
