You are all of the above as you well know, wee hen.

In 1746, during the Battle of Culloden, my ancestor was killed. His son, William Lawson (MacLaren) was transported to the VA colonies as a slave as punishment.
From the time he came to America, I have records...it is before then...Can you help? He was born in Monstrose.
Thanks

The Battlefield of Culloden is supposed to be an amazing and spine-tingling place to visit. The dead were buried in Clan groups and their graves marked with giant stones bearing the clans names.

My ancestors were also killed at Culloden, apart from a few who managed to escape to Ireland. I would love to visit the battlefield one day.

What nationality were your ancestors? You might also view:

From historical documentation, it seems that Prince Charles was a bit of a stinker!

Thank you ALL for your replies. Just as soon as I get the required number of post completed...I'll post the links to two websites...one is mine and the other is for the Lawson Family Heritage Program that I am webmaster for.
I wish that I could go to Scotland and see where that line of my ancestry came from, how they lived..who they were.
I have some Irish ancestry as well, however I am not too sure about where in Ireland they were from.
maybe I'll win the lottery and visit these wonderful places someday!

You should be happy you know...
I have no idea where my ancestors came from.
I know that my great grandmother came here from Germany when she was 18, but for the rest of my family, I have no clue.

perhaps its a thing for when you get older to look into k.snyder??
the scots seem to be more so than other places keen to know from where & what they stem, its an honour thing i think, much like a leopard never changes its spots - the clan to which you were born has certain traits in the bloodline, we believe that those traits are carried through the generations
its very easy to mock if your not scottish

As for William Lawson:
There was a book written on him, "William Lawson The Scottish Rebel" by Bill Porter.
Here is what I have on William Lawson so far:
Descendants of William Lawson
(Note 1: Bill Porter, who's research is much more extensive than mine, has reason to believe that The Rebel's father may have been Robert Lawson and his mother's name has yet to be firmly established. I defer to Bill as I respect his work greatly! Note 2: William Lawson, The Rebel, was not married to Rebecca Jane BANKS.)

I have no idea where my ancestors came from.
I know that my great grandmother came here from Germany when she was 18, but for the rest of my family, I have no clue.
I'll be happy to help you if you want. I am a "family genealogist" and do help others.

Anyone here from Scotland?

the scots seem to be more so than other places keen to know from where & what they stem, its an honour thing i think, much like a leopard never changes its spots - the clan to which you were born has certain traits in the bloodline, we believe that those traits are carried through the generations
its very easy to mock if your not scottish
I think alot of Americans lose track of their ancestors because of the chaos of the immigration and what have you. It may be the same with other countries, but for my logic this seems to be pretty significant.
I know that I have German ancestors because of my great grandmother being from Germany, but my last name is Snyder so it seems to me that this is an americanized name derived from a German type of Snyder like Schneider etc.
I get frustrated with the computer when I try and look up possible leads because I don't really know very much about them. When I get fluent with the computer one of my first endeavors will be to look though. So here's to hoping.

You'll find that genealogist are very helpful people generally.
Are your mother and father alive? How about any aunts or uncles.
Start with the people closest to you. Pick their brains for dates and places.
Marriage, death, birth, probate, etc... work backwards.
As for online research. Go to genealogy dot come and find the message board for the surnames you want to research. search the individual message boards for the first name.
You can also go to the local historical library and see their collection of records. They'll help you.
Since you are in the north, you should have an easier time. Most southern records were destroyed during the war as courthouses and homes (containing bible records) were burned. Sherman's "march to the sea" pretty much wiped out a great many records.

You'll find that genealogist are very helpful people generally.
Are your mother and father alive? How about any aunts or uncles.
Start with the people closest to you. Pick their brains for dates and places.

Honestly, in all seriousness, the only place you'll find that wav file is in this forum.
It's very late/early here....but to prove a point, I'll do another one tomorrow and use the name, Spinner.....ok?

Since so many people want to do this kind of research there are a lot of sources available.
I suggest you trawl through here first.

Written records go back a long way. The first census was 1801 but the churches kept detailed records. If you know where he was born you should be able to dig out some info. You need to know the religon. Odds are your ancestor was catholic if he was on the jacobite side.

Be careful of the names. A lot were anglicised and gaelic names spelled phonetically can be almost unrecogniseable.

Culloden is a spine tingling place to visit if you have any imagination. They have been busy restoring it to something approaching like what they reckon it was like at the time. When I first visited it was denuded of trees and there were cows in the field and a wee house with a map.

On making your way up to Culloden Moor, you pass this place.
It's Urquhart Castle ruins . Situated on an outcrop of rock at Loch Ness.
Clancy!! These are wonderful! My heart jumped when I saw them. I looked at the little house (the largest picture size) and I could "see & feel" what it must have been like to go into that home daily.
I really don't know if there is such a thing as reincarnation, I am leaning that way in my beliefs, but I do know that there are things in this world that move me to tears (and to joy) with no logical explanation. These photos are just an example.
Thank you so much for sharing these. Maybe one day...I'll get to visit the land of my ancestor, William Lawson.
I wonder when the MacLaren changed into Lawson??
Well...I digress...my mind is too busy.:wah:
