A Paradox from Socrates

Post by Aphra Behn »

Socrates said that the only true wisdom is coming to the realization that we know nothing. This is a paradox, since to know that you know nothing is to know something. Anyone agree? I thought another way of looking at it would be to say, "I believe that what I believe to be the truth may not be; and this, I believe, is the truth." Can one believe in anything, with any integrity, knowing that their beliefs may not be true or accurate? Would this qualify as an agnostic way of thinking?

A Paradox from Socrates

Well Behn, to answer your truths you so obviously hold evident, one has to realize that perception is that in which you understand based on what you have learned in the past. Can we honestly give credit to those that have taught us what they themselves believe in to be morally sound, thus paving the way for what our own opinions that have been developed as a result, to be "The" divine truths we should hold as virtues? When does natural instinct come in to play in the life of an adult, and when does the integrity of human life that has been instilled in us by those of our predecessors become the true virtues of life? Obviously there has to be some moral high ground, but the real question is, is it human instinct driven by faith from something powerful that renders no explanation beyond the power of what we ourselves know to be everything shy of intriguing, or is it rather simply just an obligation to treat others in the same way you wish to be treated yourself that sometimes leads to decisions ignored from consequences? You're asking if god exists, and I'm afraid it's a question that will be asked for some time.
