DAMMIT! I use these insects in educational programs at the zoo! They're fascinating, valuable to their ecosystem and they don't deserve to be treated like toys!

Would Six Flags offer free admission if people were willing to eat a live chicken?

How about a kitten?

OK, I realize that's a bit of a stretch, but what message does it send to kids? It's ok to indiscriminately kill living things for fun? Insects aren't important?

GURNEE, Illinois (AP) -- Why wait in line when you can just eat a cockroach?

That's the question Six Flags Great America is asking thrill seekers during a Halloween-themed FrightFest. The amusement park is daring customers to eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach in exchange for unlimited line-jumping privileges.

The promotion, which has Lake County Health Department officials shaking their heads, starts October 7.

Anyone who chows down the entire 2- to 3-inch horned cockroach gets a pass for four people to cut to the front of ride lines through October 29.

Park officials insist it's safe to eat the crunchy critters, but health officials are cautioning participants.

Consuming live roaches might increase risks of gastrointestinal illness and allergies, according to Bill Mays, Lake County Health Department's community health director.

Cockroach eaters will have to sign waivers and still pay admission fees, said Six Flags spokesman James Taylor.

I've heard in Disney World, that they will give people a ticket with a time on it to come back, & when they come back they won't have to wait to get on that ride! :) Sounds better than having to munch up those crunchies! Anyway, maybe in Six Flags it wouldn't be so bad, if you just put a little "ketchup" on those crunchies they might go down a little easier! :p

I don't believe its the taste that is so unappealing to most, rather the thought of eating such a foul creature.

Oh, Oh, I'm going to get in trouble for this one. Do you mean you guys would not kill a bunch of Ants that somehow got into your house? Would you trap them or something like that, to get rid of them? Just curious. :-2

Yeah.

And I'll kill mosquitoes and flies, too.

But I think that's about it. :)

I bought my daughter a lollipop in California. It had a cricket entombed inside it. I only got it to freak her out so I couldn't believe it when she just crunched it up and started chewing it to freak me out instead.:yh_sick

TMBS......"I don't like bugs- that especially includes roaches.. that size.. They scare me & I freak out if I see one. I kill all kinds of bugs.. Even if my daughter and I are just walking down the street we step on them... My husband does pest control so it is his job to kill these nasty things. BS...."

+++++++++++++++ Please think about the message you're sending your daughter--it's ok to kill animals just "because." Please think about that!

It's one thing if they're in your sugar bowl....and quite another if they're just doing the GOOD WORKS they do outside. Insects all have a role in ecology...they all provide something which is of value to the rest of us. I'm sure you want your daughter to grow up valuing life and not "hating" something just because it appears "foul" or "nasty."

We must agree to disagree TOTALLY on that one.

Your friend (who does NOT promise to stop talking about the beneficial role of insects in the world.) :sneaky:

Are you talking about the roaches themselves, Nomad? They have "helmets" to protect their heads during the crashing/banging TURF wars they fight for territory and for females.

Sound familiar?

http://www.angelfire.com/in/ghcfaq/#Wha ... ook%20like? Their heads are more like a mantis than a common roach.

Madagascar/Hissing cockroaches can express air through their belly plates to make hissing sounds when they're afraid or trying to impress someone/something.

Living on the forest floor, their lives are mostly about creating compost from leaf litter. They're an important part of the clean up/soil enrichment cycle. They don't want to hurt anyone....they just want territory and girls.
