Big Bums

Post by capt_buzzard »

Dozens of seats on the Queen Mary 11, the world's biggest, newest and most luxurious cruise liner, are being broken under the weight of obese passengers.

The French company which supplied the chairs, both fixed and free-standing, claims that it is repairing and replacing them as fast as possible, as they creak and buckle under larger holidaymakers.

The disclosure confirms the suspicions of many specialists that fat passengers prefer sea-going holidays to the cramped seating of air and train travel.

A spokerperson for Alstom Chantiers, the French company that provided the cruise liner with all its fittings, claimed that the problem seemed to be mainly fat Americans and Germans.

The Queen Mary 11, set sail from Southampton on her maiden voyage in January. At present she is in the Caribbean.

Dr Ian Campbell, president of the National Obese Forum, said that rising numbers of obese people wanted to go on cruises to escape the embarrassment of more claustrophobic forms of transport.

Fat people have already been marginalised by air companies. Two years ago Southwest Airlines, a US company, announced a policy to charge overweight passengers for two tickets.

Then you have another extreme. Bernadette Chirac, the wife of the French President of France, has spoken publicly about her daughter severe anorexia brought on by taunts of high school kids.

The kids are starving themselves to the bone.

My god, they feed you gargantuan meals 10 times a day on these cruise ships. No wonder so many passengers are obese.

"LON's" posting hit it right on the head! The cruise lines offer gargantuian amounts of food to all the passengers all day long. At the beginning of the cruise, the already obese person is way lighter than towards the end of the cruise. So it's not inconceivable that all passengers can gain 15 to 20 pounds. Those extra 20 pounds on already heavy person just may be the straw that breaks the camels back!

(exceeds Seat's capacity) :wah:

Yup. Generally, people who love to overeat are hefty. Cruises are great for those folks who love buffets and the ability to go back for 3rds and 4ths.

When was the last time you went to an "all you can eat" restaurant? I've noticed the vast majority of the patrons inside were not the healthiest bunch around.

You won't find these people Hiking, Backpacking, or doing anything physical for their vacations. They opt for the "sit, eat, and drink" vacations: Cruises.

What's my point? The cruise lines are silly to express surprise that their customers are fat!
