A love story

Post by Grumpaz »

Here's a sad love story about a horse.

Soon after I got Bud my sister got the chance to pick up an x-T-bred also. Boone was gorgeous. Bright red bay with black mane and tail. Four years old. He had a weak tendon in one leg that kept him from racing.

Sis had Boone stabled with some other horses one of which was a lovely mare. Now Boone was a gelding but he still fell in love with this mare.

One night during a horrible storm the mare got scared and went running across the pasture. She tripped and fell and broke her neck and I think both front legs. Boone stood over her protecting her till they came to take her away.

In less than a week Boone stopped eating and just laid down and died. There was nothing wrong healthwise with this horse. The vet checked him out thouroughly and there was nothing to be found. Boone grieved himself to death over the loss of his love.

So in answer to the question I would definitely say YES animals do fall in love.

How many times have you heard about dogs who grieve over the loss of their human? Animals who have gotten lost and travel many miles to find their family?

But then what do we know? After all there are those who believe animals have no feelings. They have no soul. They only respond to us because we are the source of their food and comfort.

Yeah.........right.
Every morning is the dawn of a new error.

My years of experience with animals tells me a different story than the

ones the "experts" will give you... and that's fine by me.

I know what I know.

Boone and his lady friend are happily racing side by side in horse

heaven...

What a beautiful love story.

The book I am currently reading is called "Kindred Spirits" and is written by a vet. He fought the traditional beliefs taught in vet school that 'animals have no feelings'. When he was a young vet starting out, this attitude gave him *a lot* of trouble.

But he fought on with his beliefs. And this book celebrates the bond between humans and dogs. He fiercely believes just what you, Val and I believe (and I'm sure Baby Rider would feel the same way).

The cover photo is a human hand reaching across to touch a dog paw extended toward the human. It's so touching. I love it :-4

You may or may not have heard of Greyfriars Bobby, here is a rough outline of the story, and a link to the website.

The Story In 1858, a man named John Gray was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard. His grave levelled by the hand of time, and unmarked by any stone, became scarcely discernible; but, although no human interest seemed to attach to it.

The sacred spot was not wholly disregarded or forgotten. For fourteen years the dead man's faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872.

The famous Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby was so devoted to his master John Gray, even in death, for fourteen years Bobby lay on the grave only leaving for food.

It is reported that a daily occurance of people from all walks of life would stand at the entrance of the Kirkyard waiting for the one o'clock gun and the appearance of Bobby leaving the grave for his midday meal.

Thanks Grumpaz & Hugh for posting those lovely stories. I know that animals DO have feelings. To wit: my dog who will not leave my heels once she sees the suitcase. She's scared to death that she'll be left behind.

Also, I just watched the film March of the Penguins. I guess the dedication and perseverance that is depicted could be attributed to instinct but what about when they drop an egg and know that they've lost a chick-the sound that they make is sadness. Unlike the sound of happiness when they are reunited with their family.

Yes, I absolutely do!! I loved the stories here, the one about Boone and was wonderful!

And Hugh, I read the story about Greyfriar's Bobby when I was a kid and many times since. That one is incredible! :-6 :-4

When you grow up with animals as friends, you know full well that they have feelings. They know love as well as, if not better than, we do.

Hugh I read the story of Bobby a long long time ago. Thank you for bringin it to my attention again.

OM you are right on about animals knowing love and knowing how to return love in the best way they know how. I get so mad at those who believe that animals have no soul or emotions and that they don't go to heaven. I firmly believe in the Rainbow Bridge and I know that all my pets will be there to greet me when I go home.

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When a beloved pet dies, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our special friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ills and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and look into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

When I was a boy, I used to cry to Old Shep by Elvis. Not that I like Elvis, but the song is so sad.
