I think the first musical I saw was Sound of Music, when a local theater group put it on. My 6th grade teacher was in the cast, and he got us invited to a dress rehersal.
On Broadway I have seen Grease and The Music Man. An interesting anecdote about the Music Man..it was a short lived run with Dick Van Dyke in the lead. MANY years ago. For those familiar with the story..remember the little boy...played by Ron Howard in the movie? In this play, the boy was Christian Slater...age 6. Wish I had kept the playbill on that one.

South Pacific, yes, most definitely. And Grease.
And I used to love all the Gilbert and Sullivan productions I saw as a child.
Oh, and I forgot Cats

I ADORE Les Miserables!
I saw it for the first time on Broadway, which was fabulous! and then about 15 times at The Palace Theatre in London.
I think I must own every cd compilation and every video version available as well as the t-shirt, key ring, mug, poster, etc. Lol!
I also love Phantom of the Opera and again have all the paraphernalia that goes with it.
At school we performed Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, which I loved, and also Hip Hip Horatio which is about the love affair between Horatio Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton. Its a beautiful and funny musical with great lyrics by Tim Rice and i always wondered why it was never made into a stage play as I'm sure it would be loved by audiences!
If anyone ever bumps into Cameron McKintosh or Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, please ask them. Thanks!

How old are you? I'm 30. I've seen plenty of musicals, but I've seen the film versions a lot more than the stage versions. That's why most of the things I listed were from "movie musicals". You can list those to, they count!
I forgot a favorite, Wicked! Saw it in NY, it was great. Listen to Wicked [Original Cast Recording]: http://www.napster.com/player/album/10812474

Onsekiz is 18 years old! He is nice and young!
Onsekiz, I would think that a musical like "Rent" or "The Lion King' might be interesting to your age group. :-6

I love musicals. I go to the theatres around here whenever I can. Saw Cats and am sorry I didn't see it in Toronto when it played for so long. I loved Joseph and Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera. I'd see them again for sure! We saw South Pacific this summer but I didn't care for the girl who played the lead, have seen her in a lot of Canadian television and just not a fan. Mattered not because I was humming Some Enchanted Evening regardless for days to come.

Technically it's an operetta, and I've only seen the Joseph Papp version, but my all-time favorite musical is The Pirates of Penzance. My favorite song from that is Come Friends Who Plow The Sea.
WITH CAT LIKE TREAD {WHUMP!} UPON OUR PREY WE STEAL {WHUMP!}
IN SILENCE DREAD OUR CAUTIOUS WAY WE STEAL
NO SOUND AT ALL, OUR CAUTIOUS WAY WE FEEL
A FLY'S FOOTFALL WOULD BE DISTINCTLY HEARD
(Yes I'm shouting but then so were they.)
"Well hang it all, you wouldn't have us absolutely merciless?" -- Samuel
"Ah, there's the problem. Until twelve I would. After twelve I wouldn't." -- Frederick
