Hey guys --

I was a lurker of FG for a month or two before I started posting. Did you also 'lurk' before joining? Why?

For me, I found some strong personalities that scared me a little bit! I thought I might be chewed up and spit out! But I was also touched by the kindness and compassion of the members, too.

After awhile, I just said "Ah, F**K it, I am who I am and they're either gonna like me or not -- so I started posting.

What about you?

I didn't read for many days before I wrote here. I had my hand grabbed one day on IRC, I was dragged over to be shown a thread and I was told "register here and help me out !". After I'd thrown in my two cents I spent a while discovering what I'd let myself in for. It probably explains the extent to which I raised hackles when I arrived.

So, did you get chewed up and spat out by the people you'd been wary of before you tried, or was it us timid ones that crept out from behind the hedges and got you?

Another excellent question from my friend Spot.

I feel quite close to the members with strong personalities. Just goes to show you . . .

But the quieter ones, and the peacekeeping ones -- I've also formed a strong bond with many of them.

Like I've said before, it takes a lot of personalities to grow a Garden. :-6

Although I do wonder how I'm viewed by other FGers -- in your face, quiet, or peacekeeping. I guess I've played all three roles here . . .

The first time I saw FG, I knew right awy it was the place I wanted to hang out. The first 2 threads I saw were 1) a thread about a program I watch on Animal Planet, and 2) a thread koan had started about how wonderful her daughter is. I thought, "Cool!!! Parents, kids, animals...this is WAY more like it!!" (I'd just come from my first experience with discussion forums and had unwittingly been sucked into a teeny bopper forum. The horror!!!!) :yh_ooooo

FG is miles, UNIVERSES better than any other discussion forum I've come across since, and I've checked out a LOT!

I could never lurk for long. I am curious though, I have 2 referrals on my profile. That means one person joined recently because of me.

Who, please? :-6

I liked the wide variety of topics, the people, and the setup. I didn't lurk. I jumped in with both feet. Been here ever since. I'm not that easy to get rid of.:wah:

Kathy Ellen, welcome to FG - I'm slightly late, I expect, for which I apologise.

I remember that I came across this forum when I googled "support groups". I registered right away. Do not remeember if I became a supporting member the first day, but it was definatly within a day or two of first registering.

I do remember after a bit having a similar thought as Cher, I would be chewed up and spit out. I was afraid I would not be able to hold my own. Have decided to choose my battles, and posts carefully, and think I am doing OK. At least, I do not think I have made any enemies....

yet.

The really weird thing is that I jumped in right away, but I only posted a few things at first, mainly i think because I am nervous of people when I first meet them, You know, what will poeple think of me etc..etc.

The strange thing is though, In my job as a security officer in a large shopping mall, there tends to be a lot of confrontation and other difficult situations, which I seem to be able to handle quite well, at least I think I do.

Know that I have got a bit more of a handle on some of the personalities here, I'm glad to say that my post count is growing nicely now, at a good rate. I think that there are some wonderfull, and kind people here, who don't tent to rip peoples heads off if they post something that they don't agree with. I feel comfortable and settled here now. Thanbks to you all!! :-4:)

I 'googled' gardening forums and ended up at FG.

Don't think I lurked at all but stayed in the background for a while.

Minks helped me a lot in the early days with the 'do's' and 'dont's as I was a 'forum virgin'. :D LC was a great forum mate and helped me out loads of times -I miss her.

Joining enabled me to make new friends, meet new people, learn a lot about different lifestyles, cultures, have fun, and learn a lot about myself.

Joining FG was one of the best things I ever did - the support I've had from some of you guys has been phenomenol ....you guys are the best !

P.S. Welcome to all the new folks that have joined recently....it's a pleasure to have you here :)

I didn't lurk much at all at the beginning, I just joined. My lurking began during my first few months. After I'd posted something, I'd log off quickly in case I'd said the wrong thing. Then, I'd creep back, as a "guest" and check. Mind you, it took me ages to compose even a few lines because I would check the spelling, the grammar, whether or not I'd answered the thread topic, whether my post made sense etc. etc.

If I recall (and am allowed to take credit ;) ), it was a doomed book club with you, Betty, and me that dragged you out.

You may take credit, dear Acc. But the start of my "coming out" was just before the book club when you pmmed me the answer to one of Abbey's quiz questions! I started to feel like one of the "gang." Thank you! :-4

I lurked for a good while when i first came here:) it did feel a bit cliquey so i think i lurked more than i posted untill i got used to some of the bigger personalities. I have mentioned this before so you'll all know , BR and LC scared the pants off me;) but i soon found out their lovely and it didnt take long to get to know the rest of you all - i think as well it was hard for me because at home i have this awful habit of making fun (taking the pi$$ ) out of everything and anything and because of the language thing i was terrified (and sometimes still am) of saying the wrong thing incase its taken the wrong way . I do still lurk and post every now and again . I am incredibly lazy and sometimes i just cant be arsed ;) and ive never really been one for lashing praise onto others i hardly know, it takes a real long time for me to feel part of something so yes i used to lurk and still do and the rest of the time i just post bollock$
