What should I do now ?

Post by Niamh »

I'm really furious to have had an email from a NEW website which unites old friends. Seems one of my friends submitted my private email address without telling me.

To stop my name appearing on that website, I am asked to register, giving all my private info. and then log-in to cancel the entry they have already created. No way will I give them more details........but what shall I do, please?

I've emailed the company to tell them that I am withholding permission for them to publish my email address and asking for it to be deleted forthwith. There has been no reply, so far.

Only 42 people know of my private email address but, even so, I cannot ask all of them for details of what has been disclosed.

I wish people would ask permission before submitting others' details.

BTW, I'm trying to hang on to my email address..........AND ALL MY FRIENDS TOO !!

Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Hows about a follow up e-mail (and letter if you can find their snail mail address) referencing your previous e-mail and threatening legal action under the data protection act if they go ahead and publish.

I don't know whether it would stand up in court but it will put preasure on them.

did you check the website address to see if it really exists? It could be a fraud mail.

Thanks BM!

Yes, writing to them IS an option........I remember seeing a PO box No in London on their website. Will chase it up when I feel less angry.

BTW, I see YOU work in London. Could'nt you nip round and do battle for me, please ? :-5 LOL

Had'nt thought of that, Koan !! Thanks.

Checked it out and, unfortunately, it's for real.

Can you think of anything else, please ?

If there is a link to contact the site you could explain your outrage via email just make sure you don't use any return address other than the one the already have.

let them know you won't unsubscribe by filling out their forms. all they need is your email address and the knowledge that you are outraged.

edit to add - oh. you already did that. look for as many contact links as you can and copy/paste your request to all of them on the site directly.

Bit difficult with a PO Box - shame, I'd enjoy a good fight.

I know it's a little after the event, but isn't your friend able to remove or edit the address?

Yeah, seems to me like you could tell your friend to have it withdrawn from the site, due to the fact that they would have all of the information in which is needed to complete a registration. Such as the password they used and the email address for verification.

If they still haggle you, I think it wouldnt be unreasonable to send them a letter stating how they are blood sucking leeches, greedy bastards, and would sell their own mother to get a lead.

I would need to write to 42 contacts to ask which one gave away my email address.........it's embarrassing . At the end of the day, that website might just be pretending to have got my address from a friend. Could they have found it any other way? I don't know. !!

Cracked it !!

There was an 'unsubscribe' link in their email, not in their website, which I had'nt noticed, and this then removed my address from their data base.

Thanks to you all :guitarist :guitarist
