Newborn baby beaten to death and dumped

By Nick Britten

(Filed: 24/05/2006)

The body of a newborn girl has been found on a river bank inside a plastic Mothercare bag. She had been beaten to death.

The baby, named Lily by detectives, had skull and collarbone fractures.

She had never been fed and her umbilical cord was still intact.

Another plastic bag found next to her contained four blood-stained tea towels, a pair of knickers, women's dark blue pyjama bottoms and a dishcloth.

Police believe that Lily was either white or Asian and are investigating her death as an unlawful killing.

Lily, whose birth was not recorded, was left on May 10 on a bank of the river Alne near Aston Cantlow, Warwicks, a popular local beauty spot. She was found by a family out walking.

Yesterday police showed clothes identical to those found in the bag along with a drawing of Lily's face in an attempt to jog someone's memory.

Their investigations so far have prompted only 30 calls and they have no leads on who the mother might be.

Det Chief Insp Adrian Pearson said: "Baby Lily did not die naturally and we need to know who she is or what her background is.

"Baby Lily has a family. Her mum, her dad and grandparents, and perhaps brothers and sisters too.

"We need to know how she came to lose her life in such tragic circumstances."

Lily - named because of the flowers blooming along the river bank - suffered the "significant and traumatic head injuries" very soon after being born, but did not sustain them during birth.

Mr Pearson said: "Mum has left us a bag of clues. I'm certain people who hear this message will put them together.

"I need people to think about mothers who have been pregnant recently and said they've lost their child.

"Lily deserves to be returned to her family and buried with them. I'm sure her family would want to know about her circumstances and how she lost her life."

Mr Pearson said the bag of clothes could be a cry for help from the mother and she might have been in an abusive relationship.

"The second possibility is that she might have wanted to get rid of the baby and anything connected with the baby.

"Lily has not been cared for since her birth. She had not been fed or had a nappy put on her and her umbilical cord is still attached."

Mr Pearson said he was not assuming that the mother was directly responsible for the injuries, but suggested that she must have been around and aware of what was going on.

The blue pyjama bottoms were part of a two-part set from British Home Stores' 2002 Christmas range, with repeated teddy bear designs printed on it, size 12-14.

Also in the bag were size 12 black knickers with a burgundy-coloured leaf pattern and a dark gold frill.

The tea towels were red, pink and green checked.

A navel ring with a turquoise stone found by forensic officers at a lay-by near the scene could also be linked to Lily's mother.

An "unlawful killing"???? WTF does that mean? Why aren't they considering it the murder that it was????

I agree BR, that has murder written all over it.

Poor baby, I don't understand folks who pull this sh*t, if you didn't want it, leave it at a hospital where atleast it could have been taken care of and adopted by someone who would have loved her. :-5

Yeah, exactly. It's a simple thing to leave an unwanted baby now. They don't ask questions, there are facilities here where you can just drop a baby off and they are placed right away. What a shame when so many people want children and can't have them. I hope they catch the bitch who did this and string her up.

The simplicity of not having to deal with a pesky, crying baby. Sick F***S. I'd like 5 minutes alone with this bitch when they catch her....just 5 minutes.

For some reason BR I don't think you'll need an entire 5 minutes. :lips:

As suggested in the article, the police are open to the idea that the mother was not party to the murder and unable to prevent it. All assuming she's still alive.

PS. Unlawful killing is an official term for murder for some reason.

Sad that someone is killing a baby to hide something. It is sick.

I wouldn't. But I'd still make good use of the entire time.

Granted, she's way too young, but when you think about how we still look at and treat young single moms, today.. and some of the crazy crap that folks pull to try and hide the fact they were ever pregnant..hoping no one finds out and they have to feel that shame, I understand why this happens.

It shouldn't, I think someone needs to start taking out these folks that kill babies in the same manner that they have killed -to set an example.. but I can also see where the emotional hysteria comes from that makes these things happen..
I wish I had your understanding, Flops. To take my own child and beat it to death is so foreign a concept I can't even put it into words. It's unthinkable....unimaginable. I'll never understand it. Emotional hysteria or not, I'd still like my 5 minutes with whoever did this. Then they'd get a real picture of "hysteria."

:lips: This is sooooooooooooo sad :-1 how can anyone do such a thing to another helpless person. Sometimes I wonder what in the world is on a person's mind to make them do such a thing.

All this killing of innocent life is really getting out of control. And what is our government doing about this...?

It’s a terrible thing but the killing of a neo-natal child in the UK may even still be covered by the infanticide act though this has been largely replaced in the UK by the defence of diminished responsibility, that is killing at a time that the perpetrator was suffering from some form of mental impairment.

I think that the defence of infanticide was/is only acceptable during the first 12 months of the childs’ life but can’t swear to it.

But it’s all too easy to immediately be condemnatory when reading about such things. Who can say what torment the mother might have been going through and what desperation she felt?

For one thing the so called ’honour killing’ is rife in the UK mostly amongst the Pakistani population and the article did mention that the child may have been Asian or part Asian.

Or it may simply be that the mother was a very frightened young child herself. Only very recently there was a case reported where an 11 year old was made pregnant. The UK has, if not then it must be close to, per capita the most underage pregnancies in the developed world.

There is a very great deal very wrong with British society at present.

There is a very great deal wrong with society across the globe, unfortunately, Golem. It's a common story over here. Sad....very sad.
