krates and cats

Post by minks »

Is it ok to krate a cat? I mean I used to krate the dog at night (kennel, box, put in a safe cozy hide away made of safe plastic and metal bars.) and he was fine all nite, he just slept.

Lately the cat has been carrying on all night long yeowling endlessly. It is high season for kitty conceptions, and so Jr minks decided to put Cat into the kennel with his fave blanket and a piece of carpet in the bottom. It is in the basement in the dark.

All night long he has been quiet and when I get him in the morning he is lying at the door of the kennel just mewoing at me in a pleasant voice. He does not seem stressed one bit. We are all feeling good about this as we are getting a good nights sleep now.

Anyone have any ideas on this. I thought about putting water in there for him but if he spills it his entire place will be wet all night long and that would be more cruel.

Minks, if kitty is happy being crated all night, there is no harm being done. If it gives you peace and quiet, all the better. As for the water, yes, kitty needs to be able to have access and there are small cups you can buy at most pet shops that clip right to the bars of the cage so he can't tip it over. But just put a little in, or maybe an couple ice cubes (so he has access to small amounts at a time) so he's not in there all night needing the litter box.

I don't have a kitty (well I should say DH's cat! :p ) that tolerates a

crate at all but if this one doesn't seem stressed (and you are probably

a good judge of that!) then go for it.

The only thing I would ask is why kitty isn't neutered yet?

I think it's a fine idea... although I prefer a separate small room. But if you are like me, you don't have one. I'd also try to find a way to work out the water. Sounds like kitty is fine with it.

Kitty in a different room still yeowls pitiously and will scratch till he bleeds :( We put a board up to protect the door but silly guy snagged a claw and it was not pleasant.

No he remains intact for now til we can afford to get him done, and have the time to be home while he is recovering. He is due to be snipped in June.

having 3 little kitties and two of em boys l can say getting the snip does make em more passive and less vocal..

but l will say mine still have a meow and a scratch at hte door..normally to look pitiful when you open it because they want to come in for love.

but l have 3 cats and 1 largish dog and if you let one in they all want to come in...

Hi has kitty started spraying yet , i think males can start spraying from around 5 months . Some animal organisations have a voucher scheme that will pay for cats/dogs to be spayed if your on a low income, do they do that in Canada . Also for a boy, the cat is in/out same day and they recover more or less straight away (there are obviousy exceptions)...... good luck .
Can go from 0 - to bitch in 3.0 seconds .:D

Hey Pants thanks, Cat has not sprayed yet. He is 1.5 years old now. I get no $$ assistance for spaying him, I pay 100% when the time comes so like I said June is the time. He really is a grand little guy cept for is un-ending meowing. Yes some meows are lovely like when he sits in front of me and looks up and me and meows good morning then puts his front paws up on my knees for a stretch as if to ask for a scrub behind the ears.

We have 3 cat's, 1 girl 2 boy's, 2 have been neutered and 1 male that has'nt he is disabled.. he was born with a under developed ribcage and i've always belived he was a bit mentaly slow ( no proof just a feeling i get) he should of been put down when he was little kitty . But because he had been shunted from shop to home and nobody wanted him we took him in knowing that he would have problem's. Well.. at the grand old age of 2 he has started spraying and it's horrendous all three are indoor cat's and have access to a enclosed outdoor space (high walled back yard-secure)and like your's he yowel's/crie's and i've been trying to find a vet that will do the op (long story). The point i'm trying to make is, cat's learn from other cat's so apperently that is why it took so long for him to start spraying and once they do having then neutered may not stop them from spraying so.. if you can, try to get him done as soon as possible because they pee every where and it can start from the age of about 5 month's- maybe we have just been lucky ..or unlucky on my part.

Maybe my cat learned from his constant companion my dog hehehe I am lucky yes he does not scratch anything but his cat post, he occasionally shreds a little kleenex but leaves it in the bathroom never all over the house, he uses his litter regularly, he is a blessing. But yes I know his little bits have to be... altered and ASAP

To get back to your original question, crating at night is okay if you get him used to the crate first by putting him in it for short periods and gradually increasing it.

The water feeders that are used for rabbit, guinea pigs etc are okay, but as with the crate make sure ***** knows how to use it first, but mostly they catch on quickly. A proper water feeder though will prevent spills in his crate.

I have crates for the dogs, and whenever i leave it out, the cat takes it over and i have to manually move her out of it, she loves it.

Try and think like a cat ...lol...make out the crate is for a dog, and your cat will love it ...lol..:-6 :-6
