Potter County Justice of the Peace Haven Dysart did not have a lot to work with Monday after a human head turned up in a trash truck.

"I wrote down the time, location and where the head was found," he said. "If we don't find anything else, we still need to have some kind of identification. We will send it off, probably to Lubbock."

About 10:50 a.m., a solid-waste employee called his supervisor who called police. The employee had spotted the head in the hopper of his truck while compressing the trash in it.

"At that point they stopped the truck," said Amarillo Police Department spokesman Cpl. Jerry Neufeld.

Police responded to Northeast 11the Avenue between Lincoln and Buchanan streets. The truck had just emerged from the alley between Lincoln and Buchanan.

After Dysart examined the scene, police donned gloves and a crime scene investigator got into a hazardous materials suit. He entered the truck hopper to take photographs and remove the head in a white plastic bag.

The truck had dropped off a full load and then emptied more than 40 Dumpsters into the hopper before the grisly discovery. Police started retracing the truck's travel in northeast Amarillo including around Thompson Park.

"They've got a lot of ground to cover," Neufeld said.

Police sorted through the trash in the truck all afternoon after it was emptied in the city's transfer station.

"The trash is going to make any forensic evidence hard to collect," said APD Lt. Gary Trupe. "Hopefully, there wasn't something that was in the first load that was dumped."

Police were not calling the situation a crime on Monday while looking for clues, such as evidence of how the person who's head was found died. Police did not release an estimated age, the race or gender of the person.
