Bad Snow Storms !!!

Snow storm hits US Northeast

A resident of Brooklyn braves the snow storm

A major snow storm has hit US mid-Atlantic and north-east states, shutting down air travel and leaving thousands without power.

More than 2,000 flights were cancelled in the region on Sunday morning, causing chaos at airports around the country.

New York city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said the storm was dangerous and urged people to stay at home.

Meteorologists have been predicting winds of up to 50mph (80km/h).

Early on Sunday, a deep blanket of snow lay from Boston to Washington.

Thousands of people in the states of Maryland and New Jersey were without power.

Road travel was disrupted, although main highways across the north-east managed to stay open. Authorities said they had been given ample warning of the blizzard.

Heavy snowfalls

The snow storm swept the region early on Sunday, dumping 50cm (20 inches) of snow in some areas. By late morning, nearly 58cm (23 inches) of snow lay in New York's Central Park.

The National Weather Service is predicting as much as 60cm (24 inches) of snow across the New York metro region.

This would put the storm into the top 10 worst snow storms in the city's history, the weather service said.

New York had more than 2,500 snow ploughs and salt spreaders at work, along with snow-melting machines that could dispose of up to 60 tonnes of snow per hour, officials said.

The snow storm brought an end a record-setting winter of balmy breezes in the Washington area

The heaviest snowfalls were north and west of Washington, with Columbia, Maryland, reporting 53cm (21 inches). Thousands of customers in that state had no electricity. Philadelphia's northern and western suburbs measured up to 45cm (18 inches) on Sunday morning, the weather service said. JAB and I are here. JAB got about a foot I think, I got 21".

It was cool though last night, to go to bed and the snow was coming down, and it was as light as the morning from the white out conditions.

Are you likely to get any more ? It looks pretty bad to me but we come to a grinding halt if we get 2" of snow....:rolleyes:

No, it is all finished snowing. The kids are having snowball fights, and sledding across the street.

When I get up to go outside to help them, I pooped out after all the shovelling!:wah:

:wah: No, but I heard the kids calling each other out-Nanny nanny stuff-then they dared each other to run across the field barefoot! And they did it!

I just heard that all that bad weather is heading East and coming from the US, over to us in the next day or two. Oh lucky us, we get to look forward to more wind and rain!!
