What's your base political belief?

I'm trying to get a feel for the place.

Personally speaking I'm a Liberal. What I mean from being a liberal is a traditional meaning of the word; "freedom of the individual from external restraint" I believe everyone is equal. I firmly believe in gradualism; If something is right it's destined to happen, or at least thats my interpretation of the concept.

I do have some unliberal opinions on matters such as African aid.

Basically I don't think stopping the debt is doing them any good, not so long as the corrupt leaders are in place. Africa needs to stop thinking that everything is the white mans fault and take a grip of their own affairs for once. It's been 40 years of independance and more for some of them.

Daffy, I don't know about the UK, but here in the US being registered to vote is more important than the vote itself. So few people give a damn, that the rare one to speak out is generally heard. People vote, then talk amongst themselves until it's time to vote again. The politician never hears anything but lobbyist blather. You wouldn't hire an employee and just mail in a paycheck. You'd check his work & tell 'im where he's cocked up, right? Why should a politician be any different. He's hired & working for you, whether you voted for 'im or not. Tell 'im what you expect & where he's messing up. If you're a registered voter, believe me he'll listen.

Isn't that more the definition of a libertarian?

This is the definition from dictionary.com:

* Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

That’s the traditional meaning. Many of today’s "liberals" don't fit that description, though. Many of them are extremely narrow minded and intolerant of people who don't agree with them.

I’d consider myself to be a moderate democrat. I’m not into change for the sake of change. If something’s not broke, don’t fix it. I’m hugely critical of Bush because he took a system that was working fairly well and he broke it. I’m all for the government helping people help themselves and for helping people who can’t help themselves, meaning help people develop skills and go to college, and provide a safety net for when times are tough. I’m for regulating businesses in order to protect our environment and the workers. I’m against affirmative action and hiring quotas except in cases where there has been discrimination. I’m also adamantly apposed to religious influence on government. I believe in freedom of religion and freedom FROM religion. I'm for a strong military but against what we're doing in Iraq.

I'm with ya on the citizen legislators. I actually heard a senator running for re-election for the nth time say time & again that we should keep him in Washington because he has so much seniority. I didn't hear one idea come from him, only seniority. Too bad the legislators also make their own rules.

my political belief is that as long as the "2 party" system is intact, there is no chance of politics to work as they were intended. politicians are suppose to represent the people that vote for them. and that is simply not the case. politicians only vote for the things that their party tells them they can vote for. or if they are getting enough special intrest money that will persuade them to vote for their intrest whether it's the same as the "party" vote or not. the only time the voters thoughts are cared about is election time. how can every (or just about) democrat be against alito and every republican be for him??? same for just about every major vote they cast. i've had state level politicians tell me that if they don't vote the way they are told to vote, they get their meal money reduced, they get their parking priveledges revoked etc.....

anyone that claims they are a democrat or a republican is simply stating that they are not able to think for themselves, so they just go with what the party line is. obviously there are some people that truly are republican or democrat simply because they actually do agree with & understand the partyline, but that's like .0001 percent of the people.

I guess I'm more of a libertarian than anything else. I believe that the government which governs the best is that which governs the least. And I don't believe that people can be free from both tyranny and personal responsibility, it's pretty much one or the other and you'll find me staunchly on the side of freedom from tyranny. Which is why I'm equally disgusted by both the left and the right (both in terms of American politics and on an international level.)

While the founding Father's had a notion of seniority, they never had an intent for 20, 30 or 40-year representatives. As far as I'm concerned, what we have now is "the fox watching the chicken coop." A cleaner slate would be the ticket.
