What to do with a stray

Post by minks »

Ok I am an animal lover as much as the next person, I have always owned pets, currently own a dog and a cat.

So yesterday my neighbor (animal lover too owns 4 cats) informs me neighbors moved, and left their cat behind. I am both shocked and disappointed.

However.... I detest this cat, he is mean, he pooh's in my garden, sits on my front step, walkway and lawn and glares at my pets, thus provoking my dog to get all whipped up into a Cujo Frenzie.... DAILY, and causes my cat to yeowl. My cat has escaped 2 times and this cat has shredded my cat up badly so now we really watch closely to keep control of our cat.

No body will take "sir evilness" in as he is so matted, and awful looking as well as mean.

My question, 1 will he live through winter? Is it better to call animal services to trap and take him away, or just let nature take it's course? I am certain both options lead to this cats demise :( I won't take him in as he is male like mine and my dog will hurt it badly. As well I don't want it.

Call the animal ranger and have it put to sleep. It's the kinder thing to do for it.

I agree with Orangesox on this one, Minks. This cat sounds borderline feral. Call animal control, and have them come get him. He probably won't live through the winter if his coat is in the condition you say and letting him freeze or starve is much more harsh than getting put down humanely by animal services.

The owners probably didn't like the cat either, but it was a really mean thing to just leave it like that:mad:

Oh, how mean! Call the animal services to trap him, if he is tame enough he might get a home. It would be cruel to let him starve to death during the winter.

I have to agree with everyone - call animal control. It doesn't sound like he's tame enough for a rescue group to take in. It really chaps my butt that people don't do right by their animals. It's the old owners fault this cat is in this state of mind and physical condition. They probably mistreated it for a long time.

I had a horrible cat once and I had to have it put to sleep, I didn't like doing that but I had no choice, it just had a horrible nature.:-1

Snooze is right, there are many local groups that might take in a semi-feral animal to see if they can help it become adoptable. Check out your local listings for different animal shelters and groups.

Oh yeah thanks, I think we do have a kitty rescue group, great idea all of you. I think this week I will look after this poor fellow, I know he isn't a nice cat, but he deserves a humane solution.

Please dont let the cat starve . I found a cat in the same condition she had one eye terrible cat flu and was starving while on holiday in cyprus about 4 years ago - i took the cat into our apartment and bathed it - no mean feat i can tell you, then we called an animal shelter and for 6 cypriot pounds a courier came out and collected it and took it to a sanctuary where they neutered all the cats coming in then released them within the grounds of the sanctuary an they would always be fed . If you start feeding it it will rely on that food so when you stop it will starve.
Can go from 0 - to bitch in 3.0 seconds .:D

While a very heart-tugging and emotional story, the last part is just totally wrong. If you feed this cat, yes, it will come to rely on your feeding it. If you stop it will not, however, sit and allow itself to starve on your doorstep, hoping for one more hand-out. Their survival instinct will kick in and they will find something to eat somewhere.

Minks, I stand by my original statement: Get animal control out there to take care of the problem. You have no idea of the vaccination history of this cat and don't want to transmit anything to your own pets. Let A/C handle it.

Yes I have resigned myself to the fact animal control is in charge of the situation. They have humane traps and will take the cat and manage it from there. I have to wonder about folks who let cats just roam free ... pity really.

Well I called animal control and I am on the waiting list for a trap. I am to bait it and trap the cat then turn it in to them, they will try and find it's owners, if that fails they will put him up for adoption.

Well if the girls are starting to feed him, they might convince their Mother that they want him and he needs a home:) I hope he hangs around and doesn't run off.

I hope he doesn't get run over. Or picked up by someone who likes to torture animals.

Well, can you catch him yourself and put him in a cat cage? then they can just come and pick him up.

BTS brought a perfectly loving ADULT cat home today. This kitty kitty was getting in the way of his subs - it just wants to rub and love everyone. Our dog knows better than to attack any animal in the house - the new kitty kitty is afraid of dogs. Our cat hates anything that even resembles another animal - including the dog he grew up with. SOOOOOOOO in the midst of presenting this new cat to the regular dog and cat who have dominated this house for 12 years, we have had BTS's back clawed to death AND set a chair on fire (don't even ask - it was toooo funny). BTS will put up a sign in his subdivision for the lost cat. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm still gut busting laughing eventhough it isn't really supposed to be funny.

How much time do you have? When we brought in a puppy and a kitten, it took our adult cat more than a year to socialize outside of our bedroom. I even fed her on top of my husbands dresser (it was his cat). The only exercize she seemed to get was the mad dash downstairs to the litterbox and back to the top of the dresser.

RUT ROH....we are in really big trouble. It has been 4 hours and the dog is barking at the new cat and the new cat isn't fluffed anymore. The old cat has taken to our bed....Geez maybe AC has an alliance with the old cat.....:-5

We in the venus household are suckers for strays too.

We have helped a few over the years and one of our little angels was a recent rescue..

We saved her almost a year ago and she was almost dead, her hearing had gone , could barely eat, she was so tired adn starved..

Now a year on she is a little madam and lovely for it..

The problem with Millie is she is half the size of the other two cats and only the size of the dogs head... yet she bullies them all..

but still goes over with a me (she has lost the ow) and a nose to nose kiss...

weird cat, but very lovable:-4

He is always kind and gentle with my husband, and watches him all day long, like a little watch cat, knowing he is sick.:)

l had an adorable black cat called PJ.

Unfortunately he got really sick and after many months and vets trips he had to be put to sleep..

I cried myself silly, felt so guilty..weird thing was, he sprang into life and gave me love and affection after l said yes to the vets prompting..

It was like he was telling me its ok mum l know you had to say yes as you know it hurts.

Oh God lm filling up as l write this....

sorry have to go for a sec..

pass the tissues sniff sniff

are we softies or what...:-1

We took in a stray about a year after his death, a pure black. Just turned up, we named him Booma, scared the life out of me...(thought it was PJs ghost)

We had him for about a year and one morning when l got up to wake my son he had died in the night at the foot of my sons bed...

Another awful time, l swore after that we would get no more...

We ended uo with Thorn the dog and Millie the cat
