It seems to me that it all comes down the the same old Demon - Oil.
In this more enlightened world the demand for oil is beginning to lessen as the dwindling supply has been necessitating it to find alternatives. I imagine this is making all the Middle Eastern countries rather nervous, as Oil is about their only natural resource. It is in their own self interests to adjust the balance of power.
