Good lord... it's out there somewhere, I saw it - slipstream even talked about it! It's on the home page at the moment. How can anyone lose The Friendship Pool? Lifeguarding's very proper, they make TV instructions programs on how to do it. Baywatch? Something like that. Carla sounds ideal for it and TM booking the pub's live acts is superb, it's a load off my shoulders. I have a lifetime ambition to get the Moody Blues here on one of their UK tours but talking them into it seems impossible.

Vegetarian moussaka with roast and mashed potato or (the unhealthy option) chips, carrots and something the chef mentioned that I didn't catch. Cheese and biscuits or profiteroles for pudding. One and six, the meal of the day's always one and six.

If needed I would like a job sweeping the floors. I love the smell of sawdust! I'd work for red wine and occasional fish and chips platter.

One jug a shift and all the fish and chips you fancy watermark, that's the best offer I've had all day. It's not bad, the house red, though there's a wonderful slightly sparkly rose come in last week that you might like to try. Delicate, just right for this hot weather.

Ok, spot, glad I'm the lowest bidder. However, that doesn't mean I don't require tartar sauce and malt vinegar for my fish. Is the rose dry or sweet?

It's not exactly sugary but I'd call it sweetish. It's very fruity though. Rosé doesn't, in my experience, travel particularly well, it sort of bruises the taste and leaves it flat and lacking the sharp clarity and definition it has when drunk in its own valley, but this hundred cases arrived in a very blessed state. It's all in a quiet dark corner of the cellar and I want it all finished by next summer please.

You may indeed have the choice of malt vinegar in a bottle, tartare sauce made fresh today by chef with capers I picked and pickled myself and sea salt from Noirmoutier in a small silver salt dish.

I'm around, I'm just getting some work done before it piles up on me.

There's a fairly standard selection for breakfast laid out in the Lounge every day from 6 until 8, anyone later than that can ask at the kitchen and get some made up fresh. The Lounge Breakfast has all the constituents of a normal English breakfast - the eggs are left uncooked but there's a hotplate or a hot dish to crack them on or in so they're fresh for each customer, and boiling water for those who want them boiled. There's a 12-slice continuous belt toaster, Kedgeree, Kipper Fillets, bowls of sliced Mango, Passion Fruit or Durian. I expect the range will expand as guests make suggestions.

I hope everyone who stayed over slept comfortably? We only have the six guest suites up the stairs to the left of the Long bar open at the moment but there are more in the back for the summer tourists.

Oh, the room was just beautiful and when I opened the outside door, I saw the most perfect rose garden path This is a wonderful place and I am booked here for the whole Summer :-6

Well, except that there's not even a juke box, radio or TV in the building. You might like to sing with the band when the band's practising though and find out whether you're in sympathy with them. Ask for Pennies From Heaven and take a single shot of whiskey just before they get into it, your cue's about 50 seconds in.

Champagne's not a simple topic. I do realize there are people who think it fashionable to ask for Brut or drier but I find a lot more satisfaction in a Blanc de Noir Demi-Sec, perhaps one of Bollinger's Pinot Meunier blends rather than their vintage. There's a lot of snobbery about vintage and Bollinger's cave managers go to such trouble blending exactly the effect they're aiming for, it's a great waste a lot of the time when it's passed over. Fourteen and six please.

The Rose probably goes better with fish. I'm not keen on too sweet wine (gives me hangover on one glass) but I'd like to try it. And since you are getting a hundred cases you will need someone to drink it! Rose probably doesn't keep well. That homemade tartar sauce sounds delish! I'll need some springwater on the side due to the salty nature of my meals, haha.

The thing is...

weeder, that garden is huge, there's fifty three acres out there mostly ornamental, linked pond systems, several temperamental fountains that date back to Inigo Jones - I have a specialist company comes in for a day and sets those up every April - and the Hidden Valley is so frost-free that there's a stand of palm trees down there which were planted to commemorate the fall of Sevastopol and survived all this while.

As for you other specialists, we have a very seasonal trade and it's only really September to the end of the year when one might expect the commercial sector to thrive to any extent. We have the rooms of course, and having had the Wrens here during the war we have a some unexpected equipment too in the East Wing, but until custom builds I think you'd feel very frustrated if you'll excuse me getting technical.

What I might suggest for you to consider, I'll leave you here to talk it out among yourselves, is that perhaps you, minks, and your "couple" of girls (I make it eight!), could keep the garden tidy until the rush comes in the fall, and weeder handles the odd indoor guest who's in need of expert care overnight. To be honest minks they're looking a bit pasty from being indoors so long, even you can see that, the fresh air's exactly what they need, and if you're as brimming with energy as you look, weeder, I think we might have found a perfect solution all round.

Another bottle of Bollinger Demi-Sec, for the pool girl - I knew we'd get through that when I saw it on the importer's list - and a half-sweet slightly bubbly English equivalent from Somerset for the young lady with the big smile in the corner, here's your cider miss, we only do pints by tradition here, take a deep breath and don't rush it. And another Newcastle Brown for your friend on the piano.
