See if that link works. I went to Washington Post and searched their website for it. It pulled up a couple of different articles...

ok i read it...it's so wrong on several levels. you cannot go against public policy to make a bust, or against the law, or even order a deputy to circumvent their own morality or put themselves at risk for STDs. i'm pretty well appalled, and i suspect that sheriff will be out on his arse. he should be.

obviously i don't know any details, but the act of touching her was a simple battery, so that's probably why she got in trouble.

I swear it happened right here where I live, have you seen the story yet? I'll find a link!

Probably somewhere at www.fredericksburg.com

We had a massage parlor here for years. Shirleys Massage. They wanted to put them out of business so they would go there and get the names of all the clients and call their wives and tell them they neede to go get checked for VD. Later on they passed a law that you have to have a degree in anatomy in order to be a massuess. So then Shirleys became Shirleys couciling service.

We used to haggle price with working girls all the time when I worked nights. We never had any thought of really doing it.

Here in OKC they have a program called "John TV". When they bust a man for soliciting they put his picture on tv.

i found this today DG...and a deputy left $350. tip of taxpayer monies!! ............EST February 17, 2006

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. -- The Spotsylvania County sheriff in Virginia has suspended the practice of allowing detectives to receive sexual services while investigating suspected prostitution.

Sheriff Howard Smith defended the practice this week. But he said in a statement Friday that he suspended the policy "because of the public's express response."

Smith told The Washington Post this week that sexual contact was necessary to obtain a conviction. He had said that he stood by the practice, but limited the work to unmarried detectives. He also said the practice was not new.

The sheriff said detectives spent $1,200 during four visits last month to a massage parlor. He said multiple visits were necessary so detectives could build trust with the operators. One detective left a $350 tip.

Detectives shut down Moon Spa last month, and charges were filed against five people.

Spotsylvania Commonwealth's Attorney William Neely said he respects Smith's decision to end the practice, but refused to apologize for the officers' tactics.

Henry Connors, president of the county board of supervisors, criticized the policy this week. He said Friday that his opposition was "never about the need to stamp out prostitution or crime. It was always about the tactics."

Several police officials and legal observers say the practice has been tried by other agencies across the country, but they knew of none that still permit sexual contact with suspects as part of prostitution investigations.

My question is... do you think Americans are overmedicating themselves?i can only offer my non-medical opinion based on what i read and people i know. if the drugs really help people, then good. i am sure in many cases they do, especially if the problems are related to brain chemistry. i also think the indiscriminate automatic prescibing of psychotropics is not always warranted. people SHOULD feel their normal feelings and emotions. we aren't meant to be in la la land all the time, we must be able to deal with frustration and grief, it's the human condition.

Snooze, if I can interject in LC's thread and give you my story.

I have "situational depression" with all the stuff I've got going on right now. I have always been opposed to medicines for determining people's moods. I went to my doc. and my therapist, and both thought xanax would be a good thing for me. It did the trick for a while, but around "that" time of the month, it was hopeless. Crying jags, horrible mood swings, zero motivation....all classic depression symptoms. They changed my meds to Paxil and Klonopin, and I feel great. Anti-anxiety and anti-depressants do work and though I do think people do tend to over-medicate, being on these meds has quite literally saved my life.

Just my $.02

BR i think that's a perfect example of how medication can get someone over a hump. it's like my friend whose husband shot himself. if the meds get her through the worst, i am glad. and the key is "situational". it does not mean a person will have to be on meds forever.
