Satisfying Day
I spent the day training on the art of using the Monadnock as a self defense tool. When I first saw the 8" wooden stick I was unimpressed. After ending up on the floor over and over again with my face smooshed against the ground, my arm locked behind my back and my thumb pressed to the point of breaking Im a believer.
It can be used in dozens of ways to submit an attacker or it can kill if used on the temple, back of neck, spleen, throat etc.
For submission purposes its amazing. Used with pressure against the inside, outside, on top of the wrist, hand or fingers it will drop you in an instant and make you beg.
It can be used on the eyes, armpit, ribcage, collarbone anywhere vulnerable.
You could attach keys to the end for a serious whollop if desired.
Great day !

I'm delighted to see you making such rapid progress in your new career.
My day, so far, has consisted of watching one of the greatest pieces of choreography laid down in the last twenty years - a movie which will still be watched a hundred years from now.
Who, out of interest, is teaching you the use of the Monadnock? Are you likely to video a few minutes of your next session for us? Do you approximate the ancient Greek wrestlers and train naked?

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.
Who has a spare two minutes to play in this month's FG Trivia game! ... My other OS is Slackware.

Im being trained by my boss. She and her husband were certified by Frank Matsuyama who is the one that introduced the tool to law enforcement in the US.
Edit: I might be confused on the instructor who taught my boss.
I didnt retain all of the information I was taught yesterday.
At any rate my boss and her husband are instructors in many many things from firearms training to the Yawara stick and even fire and glass walking for the purpose of mental conditioning.
The training is accompanied by course study in the psychology of criminal predators.

One interesting exercise we performed was to put a metal blunt tipped arrow against the point in the throat where the collarbone meets with the other end against a wall.
We leaned and pressed into the arrow until it snapped.
A test in will and overcoming fear or disbelief.

Theyre inexpensive. A few dollars. Its just a stick.
Or you can get metal ones and ones with flashlights and knives, but theyre all cheap.

Nomad is the Monadnock similar to the control baton used by law enforcement agencies? May I ask under what circumstance would you use the Monadnock? I was also wondering if you are protected in the legal aspect if someone wanted to sue you for using excessive force. I also didn't know anyone could purchase one of these. Wow, if anyone can buy one of these, that's a scary thought.

Men have been using sticks since the beginning of time to attack or defend themselves.
Its the same baton law enforcement uses and the liability for Joe citizen without certification would be much higher than with it.
I have a duty to retreat if possible. Id prefer no altercation if I can simply walk away.
You always have the duty to retreat unless you are in your home. It is a self defense tool however and in my case it would be used if needed.
The liability is diminished if 3 things can be demonstrated.
AOJ
Ability
Opportunity
Jeapordy
If the perpetrator had the ability to harm me
If the perpetrator had the opportunity to harm me
If I felt my safety was in jeapordy.
If these these things are apparent I probably wouldnt be arrested but Id still be open to civil liability.
Another important acronym is CYA
Cover Your Ass or Can You Articulate the need for force.
Probably the most important aspect of defending yourself in court.

Some aikido would be very useful to learn, Nomad. If little old me can take down a big giant guy, with a flip of my hand, you might find some of the self-defense techniques helpful in your line of work.

Cool I want one.
I just use the end of my steering wheel lock if I feel the need to carry something in certain area's of town.
I got the scare of my life last night. I was getting out of my car in our lighted car ports. All of a sudden a kid on a bike swooped down into the car port towards me. My instincts kicked in and I kicked him right off his bike. He won't forget that anytime soon. It was an innocent mistake on his part he was just riding up and down the car ports. Don't swoop down on me ever I will start swinging and kicking. :wah:
