OHHHHH,

This saddens me - Nothing better than Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid...

Paul Newman was a wonderful actor/ human being - had qualities we could all admire.

Done.

He was a fine actor, I enjoyed his movies.

He lived an inspirational life too. $200 million to charities, just from his food range? He went into a league of his own with that. And making it onto the top 20 of Richard Nixon's "enemies" list as well? That's just over-achievement.

Here's a bit of a PBS interview:DANIEL SCHORR: Here was I covering Watergate. There were hearings on going on. Three networks carried them gavel to gavel. And John Dean says, "and another thing, they've been keeping lists called enemies' lists." They were submitted in evidence but not read during the hearing. And so we ran outside the Senate caucus room and waited for a copy to be given to us. And I was handed a copy live on the air, had never seen it before, read it, and there it was from John Dean to H.R. Halderman. "Subject: On Screwing Our Political Enemies." This is a priority list of 20. And I read down a list. At 17 came to my own name with the notation next to it "a real media enemy." I think I tried not to gulp. I tried not to the gasp. So I read on. Mary McGrory, Paul Newman, now back to you. But then I broke out …

TERENCE SMITH: You read it without comment?

DANIEL SCHORR: I read it without a comment. I just tossed it right back. I wanted to collapse.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/media/ja ... _5-29.html

That's one of the most dramatic events of the 1970s, the reporter reading the list on air for the first time and finding himself listed on it.

The memo it came from by John Dean starts "This memorandum addresses the matter of how we can maximize the fact of our incumbency in dealing with persons known to be active in their opposition to our Administration; stated a bit more bluntly - how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies." It's discussed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixon_enemies_list

Oh dear, a true cinema legend and above all, a gentleman. I don't envy many men, but Paul Newman, he was the man. I am glad he had a good long run at life though, and he was loved and will be missed both by strangers and his real family/friends, I can't think of a better epitath for anyone.

Are you really referring to the President that was impeached?

If he was the most honest, then the rest really must be ‘crook’s

How can you possibly dissociate either politics or history from Paul Newman? Surely he'd be livid with anyone who tried to "sanitize" his past and reduce his relevance on the events in his lifetime.

What he said, last year, wasIt was one of my life's proudest achievements. More than the films, more than the awards — finding out that I was on Nixon's Enemies List meant that I was doing something right.

Letterman's Tribute to Paul - 9/29/08

Letterman & Paul had a wonderful friendship.

I knew Paul was on the show several times & they we're fond of eachother ..?

Letterman told a awesome story of Paul rebuilding a VW Rabbit & called Letterman to ask if Letterman would like the same VW Rabbit with a Puffer....:wah:

did any one else see this tribute - very touching.
