My good animal-loving friend is boycotting the Olympics because of this and he just sent me to the petition going around and I am bringing it here.
I don't want to be doom and gloom but this is important.
I am pretty educated about animal issues and yet I didn't realize China did this. I thought it was only in Korea. I figure if I wasn't aware of it, then a lot of other people may not be either.
I would strongly suggest you avoid watching the video and just read about the cause and if you find the skinning of live animals unacceptable, please sign the petition.

China is 1.3 billion people. Even if this video is real, it's unlikely that the people organizing the olympics had anything at all to do with it, or that not watching (I assume that's what's meant by boycott) the Olympics will only affect NBC's ratings, not China in any appreciable way.

I posted a while back about this sick video on a thread about 'dog meat being off the menu during the olympics'.
China has a bad record on human right they have an even worse record on animal rights. Skinning live dogs is fairly standard practice from what I can gather.
Boycotting the olympics will have very little effect if any. The Chinese simply view any protest as interference.
Petitioning world animal welfare oraganisations asking, no demanding that they take action against this cruel trade is much more likely to be effective.

Apparently live skinning and other cruelty is not as unknown as we thought.

An even more significant hint that animal advocates are gaining recognition and favor came on April 5, 2005, when the Beijing News published an extensive investigative report following up on allegations that tanuki (raccoon dogs) and foxes are routinely skinned alive by fur traders at the Shangcun Market in Hebei province. The market reputedly handles about 60% of the Chinese fur trade.
The claims about live skinning were originally issued on February 2 at press conferences convened by Swiss Animal Protection, the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan, and Care For The Wild, of Britain. Videotape provided to news media certainly appeared to show live skinning, but why the animals were skinned alive was unclear, since the technique would tend to produce damaged pelts, of lower sale value than if the animals were killed first.
The Beijing News might have been expected to refute the foreign allegations. Instead, photographer Chen Jie and reporter Wu Xuejan unflinchingly affirmed them, adding critical coverage of the conditions under which the tanuki and foxes are raised.
“Suning County, where the Shangcun Market is located, “has 152 sizable fur farms, 65 villages specializing in fur production, with around 10,000 farmers owning a total stock of 470,000 tanuki, foxes, mink, and other rare and valuable animals, the Beijing News reported.
The Beijing News learned that raising tanuki and other species for fur is a recent development, building on the villagers’ discovery of buyers for pelts as well as meat from tanuki, who are a raccoon-like member of the dog family. Killing dogs in the most painful possible way prevails, in order to suffuse their flesh with adrenalin, craved by dog-eaters.

Eric Mills of San Francisco's Action for Animals said he has observed frogs killed by placing several in a paper bag at once, after which, "the butcher would take a hammer and go whackety-whack-whack." Those still alive were skinned with the others.
Michael Lau, a spokesman for Chinatown's Sun Duck market, describes the standard way to kill a turtle: "First we try to get it to stick its head out, and then when it does, we chop it off right there and then. But if we can't, we'll break the shell and then take his head off, which usually takes a minute and a half." Schulke said a turtle's head can live for an hour after being severed, exacerbating the cruelty when the head isn't killed directly with a brain pith. It's grisly, but experts like the University of California-Davis's Joy Mench say there's no better way.

While there is a growing middle class that likes to own cats and dogs as pets, there are still tens of millions who regard them as only of value for food or fur. Alarmingly, the growing affluence of the Chinese has led to an increased demand for cat and dog meat and fur. Dogs and cats are on sale daily in meat markets across China. They are beaten to death, boiled alive, stabbed and strangled on the spot, or cruelly bound with wire and stuffed into sacks to be slaughtered at restaurants. There is also a burgeoning fur trade, with an estimated two million cats and dogs horrifically killed every year to supply Europe with parka-hood trims, ski boot and glove linings, fur coats and rugs and even toy animals for the tourist trade.

I am chinese. No matter what you think , I have to say something.I have never seen anyone who skinned live pets in China! These are fake news. some raustaurants which cook dogs in china are Korean raustaurants!!
and you can only eat dogs at Korean raustaurants in China!! This is like why you eat sheep and they eat dogs. We don't eat pets. The dogs we eat are big dogs which are similar with wolves!! This is cultural difference.Why do you want to demonize china and chinese people? so this can reflect you are so godish!

well, I think every country has bad guys. But this message seems to make all chinese people look cruel.We have mercy too. maybe the news is true, then It is definitely illegal in China. I think our local government can stop this, If you send a letter to that local government, these guys can be arrested.I know you don't trust communist government.But our government is really different from the cold war's.It has been improved a lot..Every chinese citizen can complain about the government as long as you don't say something that means to split up China..

I have just found this thread & i agree with Red Glitter. It's utterly abhorant.
China, your animal rights have a long way to go along with your human rights before, in my opinion, you will be part of our civilised world. You can keep your fancy fire-work displays, you'll never kid me. I have just read also how China without any explanation rounded up their undisirables & imprisoned them before the west arrived for the Olympics.
London will be rubbish at hosting the Olympics, i feel but thank god we have laws against this. In this country, they would be the ones thrown in prison.
How can we teach children to respect all god's creatures when we have a country that wants to be seen for cleaning up their act to cash in on the tourism trade by hosting the Olympics, still living in this barbaric way?
I hope the culprits rot in hell.

I was in China only 5 yrs ago. At this time journalists were reporting with photographic evidence that due to your population problem, baby girls were being abandoned in orphanages. I saw footage of a baby girl lying in the street abandoned & chinese public walking past her as if she were rubbish.

I would hardly call a Chinese news broadcast "rubbish" even though it is obviously shining a poor light on China. Every country has something they wish they could hide. Including the US and UK. I have by googling, 'skinning of cats in China', found this on-line petition to stop the pain and torture of animals for their fur.
Need I say more for those who do not believe this is truly going on? I have signed this petition.

In turn, China has developed an insatiable appetite for raw product from other countries and governments keen to export to China are reluctant to criticise or offend the Chinese government.
Given this background, will your government impose economic sanctions against China or openly criticise the Chinese government or demand that it puts a stop to the Chinese cat and dog fur trade? Most unlikely. However, there will surely be individuals within governments, so incensed and horrified by the trade that they will support Our Cause.
The Chinese government is well aware of the economic power play behind the scenes. It also knows it has a long way to go earn acceptance from the free world.
And make no mistake, China absolutely craves acceptance as a world leader that is trusted and respected and there are emerging signs that it is prepared to adopt more acceptable and responsible policies to earn that acceptance.
It knows that if it behaves or permits behaviour that is abhorrent to people of the democratic world, it will not earn the trust or respect it craves. Its our duty to show China that it can take a single , but highly significant step towards overcoming the prejudice of the millions of free-thinking decent people, if it recognises animal rights and, in particular, abolishes the abhorrent trade in cat and dog fur.
Cat and dog pelts sell for about US$1 each and every year, 2,000,000 cats and dogs suffer a horrific death, skinned alive for the pelts.
For what?
1. An insignificant contribution towards the Chinese economy - a few million US$; and
2. A clear message to the world that so long as the Chinese government permits the trade, China is not fit to take its place as a leading nation and certainly not one that is entitled to any trust or respect.
The “adverse fallout” and abhorrence for the Chinese government resulting from the trade will far exceeds the paltry contribution it makes towards China’s economy. It is in China’s interest, to abolish the trade.
It’s our duty to tell the world about the trade and kick up such a stink that our message reverberates around the world.
Remember Tianamen Square. Let’s make this another Tianamen Square – this time, for the animals.

There are many good things about China but as i said at the start, you have a long way to go before you convince the rest of the world. Yes, we do have human rights. China has emerged as one of the world’s most powerful economies but is still mistrusted and feared (as distinct from respected) because since emerging from behind the bamboo curtain, it’s government has done little to dispel its autocratic image and apparent disregard for human rights. Quite apart from human rights, decent people everywhere could never accept a society so depraved and bereft of common decency as to accept the skinning of live animals as acceptable behaviour.
It’s burgeoning economy has resulted from flooding the world with cheap consumer products produced by a cheap unregulated work force. A fact that is understandable, having regard to its enormous population and fantastic work ethic.
In turn, China has developed an insatiable appetite for raw product from other countries and governments keen to export to China are reluctant to criticise or offend the Chinese government.
Given this background, will your government impose economic sanctions against China or openly criticise the Chinese government or demand that it puts a stop to the Chinese cat and dog fur trade? Most unlikely. However, there will surely be individuals within governments, so incensed and horrified by the trade that they will support Our Cause.
The Chinese government is well aware of the economic power play behind the scenes. It also knows it has a long way to go earn acceptance from the free world.
And make no mistake, China absolutely craves acceptance as a world leader that is trusted and respected and there are emerging signs that it is prepared to adopt more acceptable and responsible policies to earn that acceptance.
It knows that if it behaves or permits behaviour that is abhorrent to people of the democratic world, it will not earn the trust or respect it craves. Its our duty to show China that it can take a single , but highly significant step towards overcoming the prejudice of the millions of free-thinking decent people, if it recognises animal rights and, in particular, abolishes the abhorrent trade in cat and dog fur.
Cat and dog pelts sell for about US$1 each and every year, 2,000,000 cats and dogs suffer a horrific death, skinned alive for the pelts.
For what?
1. An insignificant contribution towards the Chinese economy - a few million US$; and
2. A clear message to the world that so long as the Chinese government permits the trade, China is not fit to take its place as a leading nation and certainly not one that is entitled to any trust or respect.
The “adverse fallout and abhorrence for the Chinese government resulting from the trade will far exceeds the paltry contribution it makes towards China’s economy. It is in China’s interest, to abolish the trade.
It’s our duty to tell the world about the trade and kick up such a stink that our message reverberates around the world.
Remember Tianamen Square. Let’s make this another Tianamen Square – this time, for the animals.

Please urgently introduce legislation in China to:
1. Make it illegal to slaughter cats, dogs and other animals by skinning them alive for their fur
2. Protect all animals against mistreatment and cruelty of any nature
3. Ban the export from China of cat and dog fur and any products containing cat or dog fur
4. Ban cat and dog fur from being used wholly or partly in the manufacture of products in China
5. Introduce severe penalties to enforce the legislation

We accepted aid because it shows we are open to the world, we are friendly to the world. It doesn't mean we are not self-sufficiant!
When earthquakes happened in japan and USA, China also sent aid to these coutnries! China has trillions of trillions foreign reverves, and everything is made in china now, why the hell are we not self sufficient??are you mentally retarded?
