A family history and some weird coincedences!

Post by Pinky »

This is going to be lengthy, so bear with me...

I popped over to see my mum today, and she rather excitedly dragged me off at full pelt into the lounge, where she had innumerable documents, photos, wills and other paraphernalia strewn around. Turns out that she'd met up with some long-lost rellies last night and given her a load of stuff they had that used to belong to my great and also great-great grandparents.

Let me backtrack a second and tell you about some old portraits and photographs that I took when my great aunt died. She was a hoarder you see, and no-one else wanted them because they found them creepy and weren't quite sure who they were, but seeing as I'm odd like that, I took them and hung them up the stairwell!:wah:

After going through the multitude of stuff, I can now put names to faces - I have turn of the century photos of my great grandfather, the woman he married, her father (pencil portrait dated 1851) and later photo!

It turns out that my great grandpa was into property...he had about twenty houses in all, which he left to people who then sold them for the dough:-5

Now for the weird coincidences.

The house they lived in for the best part of a century was an old farmhouse in Fritton, which is five minutes away from where I live now. This was left to my great aunt who died about eight years ago now, but she ran out of money and sold it to my other half's father about twenty years back. Obviously, this was way before we ever met. Sadly, after developing it, building stuff on and turning into a mansion (I'm not kidding either!) they lost it. How funny that I should marry into the family that took the family property though?

Next one. I was born on May 9th...turns out that not only did great grandpa buy several properties on that very date (but in the late 30's) in the village where I grew up and where my parents still live, but my nan and grandad got married on May 9th 1940.

Penultimate one...my mum was recollecting walking over to Fritton from Yarmouth every Sunday, as they used to go and have dinner with them, and told me about memories of a little lane with a wooden bridge that she she remembers leading to what her grandmother called B***a lane (I'm not posting it, obviously...you'll see why in a sec) which is the road that runs past the Dell where I live! She never knew, as there isn't a road sign, lol! Plus she was very little at the time. I'm pretty gobsmacked by this time!

Last one, I promise. When I googled the old house in Fritton, I find that to my surprise it's up for sale! So, just to be cheeky, I'm contacting the agents tomorrow just to go and have a look around again, I still have vague memories myself. Not that I'll be buying of course...well, not unless I win the lottery at any rate!:D

I have no idea what any of it means, but I know it means something!

I'm scanning some photos when I return to Melbourne today . I'll put them up when I get back. I saw a photo of my great great grandmother and you'd swear my sister was sitting in the photo. She died after giving birth to her second child.

Pinky I urge you to go to this house and check it out . I want to go to Queensland to check out the pub my family owned way back when . It's still there.;) Any excuse for a holiday:D

It's well worth doing, I went to the Elephant and Castle in London last year...some olds on my nan's side used to own it a couple of centuries ago! Sadly, it has a concrete monstrosity on top of it these days and it's an indian food pub (not much of the old history) but I'm glad I went.

Funny you say about the resemblance to your sister, I said the same thing about great grandma and my cousin Sandy!

I must just add that I have a really distant memory of going there and hiding in the pigeon coop because i was afraid of the dog. Strange thing is, I can't bear anything flapping near me nowadays!

Well I gueess if you have it off with me you'll kinda be having it off with him:D:D

Yep! I'm related to him on my dads side. Isn't it funny though? No one spoke about it for such a long time because he was a homosexual. and it was worse to admit that than to admit being related to a famous actor so no one ever talked about it until well into the eighties.

ahhh this just gets funnier and funnier:wah::wah:

I never knew you cared Fuzz...what you up to next week?:sneaky::wah:

Wowee, you're well connected, what with Ned Kelly (gotta love a bad boy!) and Errol...

When you go to look at the house, let us know what it is like. I'm anxious to see if it'll bring back memories or if it'll be like looking at a place you've never been.

Yeah, I'm a little curious about that myself. When My Aunt sold it, it was still as it was when her parents had it...water pump in the yard, no electric, a range in the kitchen (which Si's dad kept!) so it's going to be a bit different.

Well we're all related in some way...did you know that every person alive today is related to one man and one woman who lived in Africa several millenia ago? They weren't necessarily alive at the same time though. That's according to Time Team's webpage anyhow.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense, not that she'd be the biblical Eve by my reckoning, Troglodytes and Neanderthals came before Homo Erectus (I'm not being rude, lol!)

Funny enough, I read reports of sighting of Neanderthal type creatures living in some mountains in Mongolia recently. I just find that sort of thing fascinating!
