Fox was doing a pretty good job of covering it until Hannity and Ferman started pretending they were Structural Engineers and began deciding who was to blame. I switched to CNN. I don't think I'll ever have the stomach to watch Fox again.

i'm terrified for a best girl of mine, ms. tracey. i tried to call several times, but the line said "Due to heavy call volume, we are unable to complete this call"

that chick better call me back asap. i know she drives that bridge to and from work everyday.

I'm glad you're in one piece, Nomie. I just heard about this on the radio. That current figure of seven dead sounds like it'll end up more like a hundred, it's an awful thing to have happened. Someone's going to be in such trouble for this.

I saw this in a comment section on, I think, a San Francisco newspaper. It deserves not to be lost.On August 1st, 2007 at 8:56 pm, Gabe said:

This is something that just doesn’t happen in the U.S. I find it very hard to believe that a bridge would just collapse during rush hour with America’s engineering skills and the safety inspections that go into constructing a bridge. Furthermore, I find it almost impossible to believe that a bridge would spontaneously collapse during rush hour.

So that is ridiculous to for the Department of Homeland Security to already declare that this was not terrorist related. It could very well be sabotage. Minneapolis has a very large and growing Muslim population.

LOL

That took me a moment. When I read the excerpt I thought they meant the terrorists were going after the Muslims.

this happened while we were on the road, it was a common route for us and we had to bypass it while it was repaired.

I saw part of the collapsed bridge today. It was difficult to get near enough for a panoramic view as the police had every possible vantage point blocked off. People came in droves to witness this. I only stayed a moment. I felt somewhat ashamed for being a gawker.

What I did see was of a horrific magnitude. To see enormous slabs of steel and concrete twisted and upended is quite sobering.

I tried to imagine the fleeting thoughts of those that endured the falling bridge must have had before they plummeted but of course its hard to conjure up that kind of terror in your imagination.

I will say that Im so proud of my city for the way ordinary citizens flocked to the scene to help. Everyone I spoke with today was eerily calm. Most of us that take that bridge to work in the morning or home to our families at days end feel like it easily could have been us.

Im very glad the children on the bus came out unscathed. I hope its an experience that carries them well through life knowing that each moment is valuable.

Moments are something we all take for granted all too easily.

Go tell someone you love what they mean to you today.

Oh Nomad, I am glad you were not on the bridge. So many were, and like you, I am glad the children were safe.

We never know when something horrible will come and we will not be here. Or our loved ones will not. We should always tell them daily, we love them.

I just got round to looking at this one now, it looks to be a collapse of an enormous magnitude, how awful. I think these type of events are very rare, there was something similar in spain or portugal a couple of years ago, and also very famously in scotland in the 19th century. I heard on the news that this bridge was only 40 years old, so obvisouly there was something very flawed in the design or material specifications, I suspect the latter, its very damning on whoever deals with maintaining such structures in the state that this was allowed to happen, very bad. I am glad you weren't on that bridge nomad!

The Minneapolis Bridge was rated as “structurally deficient two years ago and possibly in need of replacement. Will they wait for more things like this to happen?

It's a year ago today. I'm still amazed at how few people died.

There's a huge section of the Star Tribune devoted to it, they've done a great job pulling the story together for the anniversary.

http://www.startribune.com/local/12166286.html

How long did the repairs take, Nomie, before it was all back to normal?
