I haved been blessed many times with a pet that lived to be quite an age. Kate, a Persian tabby cat, was 17... so was Bailey, a feisty calico. Pearl, a Turkish Angora, was nearly 20. Charles Hamster Brown III was 5 and a half years.
How many of you have also been so blessed?

I've only ever had one pet other than my dog I have now annd he's a baby.
My cat lived until she was 17 when she died with cancer.
She was the runt of a litter that had been found dumped on a rubbish tip in a black rubbish bag, all her live she was vertically challanged with a big saggy belly where her skin thought her bones would grow into it. Her nasal cavities weren't formed properly either, but nothing ever stopped her being a cat who got everywhere and she was a great mouse catcher.

Although my wife and I love animals, we travel alot and find that owning a pet is not convenient or fair to the pet. Harry the Goldfish is the exception however. It is difficult to become emotionally attached to a goldfish. When we get back from a trip and find Harry (we call all our goldfish Harry) floating upside down, why, we just flush him down the toilet and get another.

I have three pets who have made it to ripe old ages.
My German Shepherd passed away 2 years ago at the ripe age of 16.
My mutt passed away last month - at 18!
And finally, my black lab is still trucking along at 15.
It's sad when they go, as I've spent the majority of my life with these guys. However, I'm not complaining since they've all lived far beyond average ages. It's amazing what the country will do for a pet

When you say turtles, do you mean the aquatic type or the land type such as tortoises?
My mum had two tortoises, from before I was born, she buys things like these when they have been mistreated.
Anyway, the female went missing a few years back and I found her in the pond... It was horrible, the male has been missing for two years now, and through the summer after the female was gone it was almost as he was pining for her.
We also have two younger tortoises that were born in this country, they are now 21 years old, and live in the garden all year round, because they dig in for winter and if we try bringing them in they are awake for the whole year. It's funny the difference between the ones born here and ones that were bought in from their natural countries.

As the owner of an almost 12 year old GSD, I am ever so happy to hear that
you had one 'till 16!!
My family has had a couple of horses who lived into their upper 30's and one
was my first horse ever they got for me when I was 6 and she was 6. Very,
very hard to have an animal for that length of time and lose them. Bad
enough with dogs.
I just last week saw a cousin who has a dog who is 22 or 23, she isn't quite
sure because he was adopted, but even though he has some vision loss he
is still a really vibrant active guy... who last summer got vet clearance to
take an airline trip!! Can you believe it?!?!?

I've had a goldfish for what must be nearly ten years and now he seems to have given up all will to swim and drags himself around his tank looking miserable (if thats possible for a fish) think he's on his last legs (well.....you know what i mean :wah: ) anyway ten years isn't bad for a fish

My sister's cat "Sparky" just died.. he was 20... her son is 18, we look at him a grown young man and then it hits you how long this cat had been around. She bought him right after her honeymoon - sweet little kitten.
She called me on the phone and we both cried, it was so sad.. we sure loved that cat.
Right now I have a 13 year old English Setter..."Ambush" she is fast as greased lightning when she runs, people ask if she is a puppy and they cant believe she is 13.
It is hard when a pet dies, 3 weeks ago my 10 year old daughter lost her hamster "Halo" we had a funeral and she delivered a 20 minute Eulogy and we put Halo in a shoe box along with her favorite things, peanuts, carrots, hamster treats
This is Halo and Ambush -(looks like halo is waving goodbye - LOL)

My mum has a Yorkshire Terrier who I think is about 16yrs old. We've just been told she's blind, which is a real shame because she used to be a real fiesty little thing. Its true you do forget how long your pets have been around and they just become one of the family that you take for granted they will always be there

Good morning pet lovers
I have a black, white and orange Calico cat, "Miss Kitty".
She is at least 10 years old, not sure since she was a rescue.
She was not wanting to leave the house she lived in with us when my hubby died.
It took a week before anyone could put her in an animal carrier and bring her to my apartment.
She has settled in nicely and we girls are doing okay.

I needed this place today... we are big animal/pet lovers in this house and never without at least one.
We are also pitbull lovers.. I have a 10 year old female, my "older girl" who's a pit/corgi mix of all things... she the size of a small pit or large Staffie and body shape like them but the coat/color and ears of a corgi.. She's a dear. Her
"brother" is a full blood Tiger Brindle and a big boy at 86 pounds, dog agressive yes except for his sis but sweet and loving to people and little critters.
My oldest real human kid is in the Vet field and she had 3 ferrets, 2 boxers (male and female) and a bengal kitten who's a brat named Cara. My male playes with the ferrets and the kitten but does not like the dogs.. that's a given.
My old gal here has been acting a tad weird since end of last week and having some really odd symptoms... I could kick myself for being so preoccupied with work and other things.. I said twice, once to hubby and once to my other daugther who works with/for me... if I was still a paramedic and she was human
I'd say this is all the signs of diabetes... lights on Xxena no one is home you dingbat.. I KNOW dogs and cats get diabetes but why I did not equate all the
"in my face" symptoms I have no clue. Rushed her to our vet and gave him the urine sample and her... he came back 10 minutes later advising her glucose levels
were outrageously high and she had full blown adult dog diabetes... OUCH !
They kept her overnight and all today to monitor her glucose and insulin closely and see how much insulin she would need in the initial shots.. good news is she
can be on the lowest dose but will have to have it rest of her life just like people.. bad news was she also had a raging baldder infection from it ...
She could not get into my truck and home fast enough... her brother waiting at the door for her.. he's been miserable since we left and I came back alone last night.. he's been looking for her ever since.. when he saw her run up the driveway to the front door he carried on like someone was cutting his tail off.. happy happy happy... wish my human kids were this glad to see each other after absences
We're home, she's happy to be home although she holding out from eating her
New diet food.. and thinking something might just come off someone's plate for her.. fat chance ! What got her in this mess in the first place .. uh hum.. Husband.. you hear that ????
We're considering getting another female pit pup... have to see if my daughter finds one as the rescued animals come into the vet hosptial at the University she works at, from the critters saved in Lousiana and MIssissippi. Both the dogs here will do ok with a puppy and if she lives with them, Mr. Bad Boy will accept the pup as long as its female. Time will tell.. they could use one that young to get them up and moving and excerising more.
I like cats but I'm allergic to them so we stick with dogs. I'd have a ferret but
I don't think my husband would be too pleased.. he likes our daugthers and they come to visit with her and my SIL, but they're into everything when up and moving and more than he can take in small doses I think :wah: We sit on about 3/4 acre lot here and I take care and feed everything wild that lives in our yard
in the winter and rough months... during the summer I just make sure they have
water out there. The squirrels have no fear and know I won't let the dogs do
more than chase them.. they come right up to the screen door and sit there looking into the kitchen at us... the rabbits are always on the patio and checking things out knowing no one will hurt them... we have gosh knows how many birds that depend on us to eat in the winter from chickadees, doves, cardinals, jays,
woodpeckers and a host of others.
I like all critters, except many of the two legged kind

Sorry to hear about your kid, Xxena, but I'm glad you took him in. Far too many people ignore symptoms, figuring, pshaw...it's just a dog, after all. Insulin is a tricky thing. We had a resident cat in one of the clinics I worked for who was diabetic. The levels had to be tweaked and re-tweaked several times before we got it right. Having some experience with medicine yourself, I'm sure you know what to watch for. And a human kid in the fireld is a wonderful thing! The most fulfilling work I ever did was in animal medicine and behavior.
I'd love to see some pictures of that pit/corgi mix, she sounds fantastic!!
One of the best dogs I ever owned was a pit cross, and I've known many MANY wonderful pits. Too bad they get such a bad rap, huh?
I'd really be interested in hearing more about your furry kids!

Here's the brat kids in my office conspiring against me for "more treats".. Kylee is on the left, you can see the definite corgi ears, colors etc.. but that pitti attiude and strength is all there in that little body.. that's Max on the right my brindle.
Kylee is kinda a cool story.. our business is in the inner city of Chicago old manufacturing/housing area - someone had thrown the pups out to live or die
on their own IN THE WINTER.. she found her way to our parking lot were a couple of our workers saw her and kept feeding her since she was so skinny and staving. That was around March of that year.. my husband caught on and told me about her but she was still people shy and a street dog at that time.. so I send some of our Dobe's food with him for her.. took her about a month and then she would come to my husband and one of the older guys and let them pet her and she'd take food from them. They guys in the woodshop built her a dog house
complete with shingles and hubby got some old blankets from me and she took
up permanent resident in our parking lot between the 2 storage garages which gave her more shelter. She would be at the gates to the parking lot every AM with tail wagging greeting my husband as he arrived first to open up the gates and the factory.. she'd follow him inside and he'd let her stay there when it was really cold... and give her breakfast and some fresh water.. they did this for a few months. My oldest who was a sophomore in highschool then went to work with Dad on a saturday to check out this odd little dog he kept talking about.. for some reason she went to my daughter and would allow her to touch her and feed her, she was still very people shy. They kept bugging me about bringing her home but they would also tell me how ferocious she was with the other strays that would come into the lot looking for food and how she'd go after them and fight them and chase them out .. THAT WAS HER KINGDOM, HER LOT.. HER FACTORY AND HER FOOD. Typical alpha canine/wild dog behavior (I did canine behavior for years as well).
By spring all the lost dog posters were going up on the light poles and on 3 different occasions some of the local monsters (neighbor kids) showed up claiming her as the "lost dog".. they knew she wasn't but they think they will get reward money for brining any dog to the owner.. when that doesn't pan out they usually sell them to the local gangs for a few bucks that use them for the illegal dog fights.. and that is what happened to her each time since it was obvious she was a pitmix and had the tenacity to back it up. Each time she escaped and managed to find her way back to the factory... the 3rd time she was gone for weeks and we had given up on her finding her way back or being alive. Out of nowhere she showed up at the front door of the factory - badly hurt from a fight, torn up, bleeding but she found her way back to where she felt safe and people were good to her. Luckly for her my husband and one of our partners and my daugther were there for a few hours and found her lying by the front door.. daugther was working at the local vet as an assistant tech in training at that time in highschool and took her in and cleaned her wounds, gave her a bath, dressed some of the wounds, fed her and told her father "she's coming home with us MOM likes it or not"... and that's how she came to be part of the family 9 years ago...
First week was rough.. she was street dog and went on the attack after our big doberman that was 4 times her size all day long... I was at the point of telling them it was NOT going to work when one morning I came down and it was quiet instead of a lot of snarling and barking (we had to keep her separated from him).. she had somehow gotten out of the kitchen and was sound asleep in his dogbed with him. They were inseperatable from that day forward until the day he died years later. The year old Charlie died we had gotten Max my brindle.. who was just a pup - 13 weeks when we got him from the Pit Rescue shelter.. he comes from a good breeder and was show quality, but his original owner didn't want to be bothered with housebreaking etc and dumped him in a kennel and abandoned him... they sent him to the shelter and we were on their waiting list for a pure pit
pup that was not street bred or inbred and we were called... drove up to Minneapolis to get him.. Kylee more adopoted Max like her pup although we had her spayed when we got her (our vet figured she was about 10 - 12 months old at that time)... they were cute the 3 of them together - Old huge Doberman, and the odd looking pit/corgi mix and of course the little pitti pup with the huge
paws and head compared to the rest of his body.. 3 of them slept together
everynight in the old dog's bed. When Charlie died it was rough, the two of them
went nuts trying to find him and figure out where he was...
People say animals don't have feeling... BS ... Our Vet said Kylee was in such a deep depression over Charlie's death she wanted to put her on antidepressants, but Max was only about 6 months at that time and was such a pain in her butt always bugging her to come out and play with him.. after about 10 days she decided to join the world and the family again. That's why he was so upset when she and I left and I came back without her. He was so cute when we brought her home last night.. he was beside himself with joy that she was back home. She could not get in the front door he was nuzzling and licking her so much as his welcome. He's been keeping a close watch on her all day so far and if she gets up and goes to another room he's right behind her to make sure she doesn't leave again !
Max is VERY VERY dog aggressive but when you see him interact with Kylee or how he and Kylee and Charlie were before Charlie died its hard to imagine him
that aggressive towards any other dog... BUT he is.
She's not thrilled with the Diabetic prescription dog food, but she ate it this AM with my coaxing, I gave her, her insulin shot .. you can tell she's feeling a LOT better.. and taking a snooze now behind me in her usual spot when I'm working..
the Maxinator is lying in front of her .. nose - nose like they always sleep.
Urgh.. one of them just farted... time to leave the room for a few minutes :wah:
