Brave unnamed dog saves mother of owner

Post by spot »

An Australian woman has been saved by a pet dog which leapt to her aid after she was attacked by a large kangaroo, her son has said.

The marsupial assaulted Rosemary Neal, 65, at her farm near Mudgee in New South Wales, 265km (160 miles) north-west of Sydney, her son, Darren, said. "The kangaroo just jumped up and launched straight at her," he said.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-p ... "Kangaroos can stand more than 6ft tall (1.8m) and weigh 100kg (220lbs)". I wish I could do that. "Some Kangaroos stand more than 6ft tall (1.8m) and weigh 100kg (220lbs)" is rather more accurate.

Whoever wrote the BBC report used "said" too many times. Poor sub-editing there.

Brave unnamed dog saves mother of owner

Actually, now I look, there seems to be a spate of stories like this.A dog owner in the US state of Maryland says her golden retriever Toby saved her from choking to death by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre. Debbie Parkhurst, 45, said she was eating an apple at home last Friday when a piece became lodged in her throat and she began to choke. Ms Parkhurst said she pounded on her own chest but could not move the piece. Toby joined in, jumping on her chest and dislodging the apple, then licking her face so she would not pass out.

Cindy Hernandez's dog, Bob, turned out to be not only her best friend, but her savior, giving his life to save hers. Bob leaped in front of her seconds before a fast-approaching alligator reached her as she swam in a waterway off her dock in Tampa, Fla. Holding another dog of hers, tiny Mia, Hernandez told Smith she was playing fetch with Bob, a chow-lab mix who weighed 80 pounds, when she decided to go in the water to cool off, "and that's when I heard the alligator coming."

A stray dog saved the life of a newborn baby after finding the abandoned infant in a forest and apparently carrying it across a busy road and through some barbed wire to her litter of puppies, witnesses said. The stray dog found the infant, clad in tattered clothing, in a poor neighborhood near the Ngong Forests in the capital of Nairobi

A south Georgia woman bloodied in a car wreck says she owes her life to a German shepherd who - thankfully - just wouldn’t stay in his yard. Shannon Lorio says that after her car careened down an embankment, the wayward dog found her bruised and battered on the vehicle’s trunk, pulled her by her shirt collar, dragged her about 50 yards through briars to a highway and let her lean against him so she could flag a passing motorist.

When Horne, 38, had a diabetic seizure at home last month, she told Percy to bring her the phone. Once he fetched it, Horne dialed 911. Medics and firefighters found her unresponsive on the couch where the 3 1/2-year-old dog had dragged her. When Horne recovered, she explained that Percy knocked the portable phone from its wall cradle and brought it to her.

"I thought I had a headache and rang work to say I wasn't coming in," Ms Waters said. "It wasn't until after I had collapsed and Pippa was behaving in such a worried and frantic state that I decided to get some medical help. There's no doubt she saved my life. If she hadn't been able to get me up off that kitchen floor, who knows what would have happened."

Rescued mongrel Alea scurried off to pull Maria Ardley's husband, Steve, away from the television. She led him to the closed bathroom door and ran round in circles and Steve then found Maria slumped on the floor. Maria, from Lowestoft, Suffolk, was taken to hospital to have surgery for a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.

Seventeen-month-old Charlotte Svilicic was playing in the garden of the family’s Atherton home on Monday when Khan the doberman grabbed her by the back of the nappy and threw her clear of the approaching snake. The heroic pooch was bitten by the snake after saving the toddler but is recovering after a dose of anti-venom. In an amazing twist, Khan’s breeder revealed his grandfather had saved a child in similar circumstances. Charlotte’s mother Catherine Svilicic yesterday told The Cairns Post Khan had saved the child’s life and the family would be forever indebted. "If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed it," Ms Svilicic said. "Khan was really concentrating and was acting aggressive towards Charlotte and kept trying to nudge her but it wasn’t working, so he grabbed her by the back of the nappy and threw her more than a metre. Charlotte looked pretty shocked and then Khan screamed. I realised quickly it was a snake and Khan had been trying to get in between her and the snake before he threw her."

Tallebudgera Valley retiree Fay Palethorpe, 68, was in the garden of her 8ha (20 acre) property in Syndicate Road when she came across the snake about 9.30am on Sunday. One-year-old Tess and Ms Palethorpe's two other kelpies, including the puppy's father Widgee, sprang into action and attacked the highly venomous snake as it lunged for their owner. The snake was injured and fled but Tess was bitten on the ear in the melee. The brave dog now lies fighting for her life in a Tugun veterinary surgery.

He saw the form of a man floundering in the water. The dog jumped in, catching the clothes of the man, tugged him near enough to shore to allow the Poormaster to complete the rescue. The man was under the influence of drink, and had stumbled into the water.I like that last one, it's from 1901 about a collie belonging to Poormaster Jacob Ryerson "whose home is on the banks of the Passaic River in Totowa Borough". What's a Poormaster?

Poormaster is the name of a now obsolete job position similar to that of Paymaster. Most of the states had their own poormaster.

The duties of a poormaster were to validate those who applied for relief and issue funds. The job was often a political sinecure before the 1930's. However the job was not without its risks. Those rejected often held grudges and poormasters were sometimes guarded by police officers during the Great Depression.

I'm assuming was only the case in the United States...

I'd no idea Socialism had ever gained such a significant toe-hold in your country.
