California fires turn skies orange

Lightning blaze kills firefighter and thousands forced out of homes

Residents watch helplessly as the orange glow from devastating fires fills the California skyline yesterday.

At least 50,000 acres of forest is under threat from the blazes that have killed one fireman and forced thousands of people to flee their homes. Thick smoke from the flames blotted out the sun.

Overworked firefighters struggled to cope with the inferno, one of the biggest to hit the state.

At least 367 blazes were burning along the Big Sur coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Most were started by lightning, but fire chiefs last night feared more could be sparked by fireworks from Independence Day celebrations.

Resident Kirk Gafill said many people had defied evacuation orders to try to save their homes from the fires which have been burning since last month.

He added: "Firefighters don't have the manpower to secure our houses. We can only rely on ourselves and our neighbours."

Oh yes:D i was in fact involved with youth football for many years,, running teams, involved in setting up and builfding up a huge football club, running venues, working for a youth football league, and even for a time writing reports on youth foootie for a weekly supplement in our local evening paper:D I support Sunderland by the way:D

I love to play baseball and my favorite team is the Reds but I have to admit...I find watching the game on television to be incredibly boring...

Yeah...

It's called the "Pennant" in baseball terminology...

If I'm not mistaken I believe it was their first ever World Series win is that correct?...

No. They won it in 1903, 1912, 1915, 16 & 18, 2004 and then last year. They also won in 1904 but there was no World Series as the Giant's refused to play. Wusses.:wah:

Wow...Am I dreadfully wrong...It may have been the White Sox that I was thinking about...Didn't they get knocked out by one of the two leading up to the World Series?...

when hubs was in the RAF we used to play a game at his section barbies,,, two people stood in front of each other and had to throw an egg to each other,,, you had to be careful how you caught it so it didnt smash, and every time you passed and caught, you had to move a step away so that you got further and further away,,, if the egg smashed when you caught it you lost,,, and also had a handful of raw egg:wah:
