Are You Prejudiced?

Post by cars »

Blazen's Thread started me thinking::thinking:

DO YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE PREJUDCIED & MAY NOT EVEN REALLY KNOW IT?

When very young, I used to be prejudiced against everything & everybody, cause that's the way I was raised by my very prejudiced parents. "They" didn't know any better cause that's the way their parrents raised them. As I got older, I started to realize just how very wrong they were to judge a Book by its cover!

Over time I learned that "everyone" is one of "God's Children, not just a select race, religion, creed, or whatever.

Societies motto should be: Live & Let Live.

All don't have to live according to the same standards, (define standards) so long as no Laws are broken, and no harm is being done to anyone!

Yes in my early adult life but after getting exposure to more and more racial, cultural, social, economical (that was big for me as I grew up), demographical (another biggie in my life) groups I learned just what you stated Cars, Live and let live. Plain and simple.

I've had a lot of prejudices dispelled in my life and it's such a liberating feeling to see a group or an individual in their true light and not through the skew of my prejudice.

Am I prejudiced now? Yes, I'm quite sure I have a few that I'm not yet willing to admit to. But, hopefully, given time...

prejudice and bigotry are two different things. i have never been a bigot. but i sure am prejudiced against a certain group of drug-dealing jitterbugs with their pants around their butts and their hands on their gentitals. ...as well as a certain demographic of swastika-tattooed redneck skinheads. :(

I grew up in a family that called people chinks, ni**ers, mesicans etc. You get my drift. I don't know what it was about me but I never found any difference in people. I remember the first time I actually saw an African American - I was about 8 - she was visually surprising for me but we became friends.

Oh yeah, I'm prejudiced. I hate bigots, welfare cheats, people that don't vote, guys that don't support their children, guys that beat their wives, child molestors, tax cheats, intolerant people, religious zealots, drunk drivers, animal abusers, gangsta rap, and that's just for starters.

Tax cheats ?

You mean like corporations that have full time staff finding loopholes so they can avoid paying their fair share ?

Loopholes are not ILLEGAL. Big difference. The problem is the loopholes, not the people that take advantage of them.

Lon, you be my kinda person! Thanks for the list!

I remember when I realized I could muddy up my mind with junk like that, (just general everyday crap that meant nothing, not even prejudice) or I could just let it go, let people live how they want. Very refreshing to your entire mindset!

I think if we are all honest..we would say yes..even using the most conservative definition of prejudice.

If you live long enough, you will develope them...its quite natural to group objects and classify..we do it all the time. I think a more accurate question is.."do you act on your prejudice?" For me, I try hard not to..I am aware of my prejudices and try to act according to what is fair and prudent in treating another human being.

Sorry but I have to disagree. :-2 "If you live long enough", you will not develop prejudices, you will become more understanding. Finding "wisdom" & realizing that "all" people are just that, people. Not one race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, or whatever are better than others, we're all the same. We all bleed when cut, all hurt when hit, all born, live, & die, & all love to be loved! :)

Well, I was raised in and around Detroit, so you can probably guess. There is a thread about this and my opinion is spelled out there. I'll see if I can remember which one it is.

Oh yeah, I'm also homophobic. (That's a prejudice, right?)

My reply in the "A long story about racism and hatred" thread, posted by Lon:

I've been staying away from this thread, because I'm quite sure what I have to say will be extremely unpopular, and I'm sure I'll get some strong reaction. What the heck, I gotta do it.

I grew up in and around Detroit. Inner city, near-by 'burbs, etc. I have been around black folks my whole life and here is what I've seen: Gang-bangers, thieves, high school drop-outs, welfare recipients, jobless, beggars, violent offenders of all types of crimes.

Here's my theory: The black community, that I have been exposed to, is the worst example of these people. I have no illusions that all the activity I stated above is restricted solely to blacks. I know that people of all races can be included. However, when you see, every day for your whole life, the majority of them are black, you tend to formulate an opinion.

I see the most-wanted lists in our police stations, (in LOTS of cities) and they are all black. I see the statistics for high school drop-out rates, mostly black. I see the numbers of people on welfare, 90% black. The gangs in my area are made up of, you guessed it, blacks. The drug dealers? Black. Yeah, I have a negative attitude about the black people in my community.

Another theory: The black community, that I know, has been crying out for equality and reparations from slavery. Equality? They do everything in their power to separate themselves from other races in every aspect of their lives. From their dress, to their manner of talk, to their music, all under the guise of "expressing their heritage." I would wager a years worth of paychecks that not one single true African walked around listening to violent rap music or wore their pants around their knees or spoke in (my absolute favorite term ever) "ebonics." I bet Africans take pride in their homes. I bet Africans take pride in themselves.

And reparations? No one alive today is a slave, or owned a slave. Neither did that occur in the generation before this one or the one before that, or the one before that. Slavery has been abolished, (thank God) and no one alive today is responsible for it. To expect a hand-out or a free ride because a family member 250 years ago was a slave, makes that "N" word fit quite aptly. These are the kinds of blacks I have grown up with. Perhaps if I had grown up somewhere else, my opinion would be different.

I can see you all now...thinking "Wow, BR is a racist." My opinion of the black community is not popular with you and that's fine. Keep in mind, though, that when I think of the "N" word, it can apply to people of every color. I know white ni**ers. I know mexican ni**ers, I know Latin ones, I know Asian ones, and I know black ones. I also know people of every race who are educated, work hard, respect themselves and other people. It just so happens that the majority, the LARGE majority of black people that I know, do not fit that category.

So thats your experience, its what you draw on what youve witnessed thats all understandable but Im pretty sure the bigger cause stems from economic equality. But the truth is you just have to pull yourself up and that excuse doesnt fly real far with me.

I guess my thinking is theres a more productive way to go at it than perpetuating the problem.

If there is a problem.............there is a solution but it takes everyone to get involved.

OK, but WHO is perpetuating the problem? In my opinion, the perpetuators are groups like the NAACP, the ACLU, and the United Negro College Fund. And the solution, whatever it may be, WOULD take everyone to get involved and I just really don't see that happening. I'm not some radical, skin-head, swastika flying nut-case, but those that are, would never be part of the solution.

Lon: I agree with your list but I don't dwell on them. I hate it all but I figure, what can I do about it so why get my blood pressure up. I am married to a very prejudiced husband who rants and raves about every thing he reads in the newspaper. He gets mad at me because I won't agree with his way of believing. Ha, Ha , have I got sad news for him and anyone else who trys to tell me my thoughts should be their thoughts. I've got a brain and I'm educated so my ideas are my ideas and he can go(unprintable). Whoops, I got and unpoised thought.
