What is an emo

Post by Hdestiny1234 »

I am currently conducting research for an essay into teenage suicides and during the course of my research I keep coming across the word "emo". After asking my 12 year old niece about the word, she said it means emotional and relates to children or "teens" that want to kill themselves, surely this can't be true? Can someone shed some light? The more I look into it, the more it seems she is right.

The word is applied to a wider age range than children or "teens" and the emo sensibility extends beyond ideas of suicide. Some would consider emo a positive life-affirming world view.

I have a 14 year old daughter and here the kids refer to "emo" as a gothic kid that is really depressed and appears to be a loner and suicidal.

An extremely depressed version of goth.

There was an emo kid walking in front of my daughter and I this weekend and his arms just hung at his side, only enough evident life force to keep his feet moving. At one point we got distracted and he disappeared. I ventured a guess that he had lost the last of his will to live and decided to spontaneously combust... which had my daughter chuckling. Turned out he'd just gone around the corner of the building. :D

My 13 year old told me that one of the girls at school is an emo and had started to self-harm, although apparently she's not doing it properly 'cos there's hardly a mark!!

Fortunately when I asked my daughter if she'd ever considered self-harming she just looked at me as if I was mad and told me she'd enough scars from her excema so why would she want more.......
