The Is it me, or is the world really up sh*t creek this time? thread.

Post by Galbally »

Hi all, I don't know if anyone else if feeling this but I am definietly fighting off a feeling that everything in the big bad outside world is all going a bit wrong at present. I think Cole Porter once defined it as "vainly fighting the old ennui" Now, I know, I know, this is not an uncommon idea or feeling, but I have definetly been feeling like that for a while, so much so that I am losing interest in current affairs as its all a bit bleak, so perhaps its time to worry more about having some more fun, (especially the fun that involves members of the opposite sex) as this place probably isn't worth worrying about anyway.

So, I decided to start a new thread, where peolpe can talk to me about their pet fears about the world, and I can help them dismiss them with some of my usual casual insults, along with some charming Irish banter, and other vague innanities. We can help to not solve the worlds problems right here, and also get a laugh out of everyone's troubles, woo hoo, just like the Blitz down in the undergound init? You see, its my inverse reaction to the spirit of the times, when things are all frivolous I feel serious, as everything starts getting real serious, then I get all jokey again. God, where is Jimbo when you need him?

It's electronics. Ever since we fell in love with electronics the world has steadily gone to hell. Common sense, gone. Schools teach our little snotwads how to punch a keyboard and read a screen. Damn little else. Take that away from them, they are lost. They can't amuse themselves or even do simple math in their pointy little heads.

Privacy, gone. Cameras everywhere, watching everything.

Freedom? Fast becoming just a meaningless word in a dictionary.

I'm in a ranting mood today. Should go back to bed.

Well Dr. G I for one agree with you 100% damn the torpedo's full speed ahead. I'm gave up reading the paper a long time ago just a bummer everyday. Now I have to stop reading the news on the internet and I will be good to go.

There was a good story here in California this weekend and it wasn't Tiger Woods winning the US Open, yes he is something else.

The biggest story was a Truck Driver stole $20,000 worth of Diesel Fuel, damn I wished it was regular I would have bought some from him. I know that gas prices are double ours in your neck of the woods. But here in California they are at $5.04 for a gallon of regular gas. I'm thinking about stealing some myself. :wah:
ALOHA!!

Yes, I see what you are saying, but isn't technology a double edged sword? In that all this computer crap is mostly pointless and annoying, like the circus, but then if you didn't have the internet you wouldn't be able to complain about it either would you? I think what you may be missing is that our main problem is we have too many children, and lets face it, they are annoying fact of life number one. Therefore we need to reduce child numbers enourmously, perhaps by sending the really dim ones up on school trips to the artic without lifejackets, the remaining Polar Bears will finish any off that survice the melting ice and get onto the little icebergs. :)

Though if you are adamant about the electronics thing, I would say to you that I have seen plenty of amazingly advanced machines and wotsits, and gadgets in my time, but I ain't never seen one that could beat a human with a lump hammer yet, "TAKE THAT DEEP BLUE YOU SCUMBAG, BEAT ME AT CHESS WILL YA?..... Yes, newspapers are rubbish, you should only use them to eat chips (sorry "fries") out of, with some nice fish. Also, learning about what is going on in the world is pointless, they will only use it to sell you more of that electronics crap that we have just worked out we don't need and is just p*ssing us off anyway, so I am totally with you. Learn about the things that live in your garden, the little insects and the plants, who gives a stuff what the Premier of Angola things about immigration into South Africa, thats his problem.

I think a special mention should go to the californian truck driver and the diesel, bravo my man, thats the ticket, when times are hard we can always revert to the tried and tested method of looting everything thats not nailed down, I have watched all the Mad Max films so I am well prepared for the end of the age of oil myself. A 5 star performace, well done to him, the people in Europe will be following suit over the weekend, Exxon you have been warned.

Dr. G, everytime I open the newspaper, and go to the only section worth reading-the comic section-they keep messing with what cartoon strips to put in. Some of my favorites have gone by the wayside lately, what is wrong with a good laugh now and then!

Maybe this is why there seems to be more gays now days. It is the human race trying to take care of the population problem like in the animal world. Now if they go ahead and allow gay marriages maybe all the closet gays will come out and marry each other instead of staying in the closet and begrudgingly procreating.:D

Yes, I think that Dawn French could be made an example of by being put into the stocks outside the Tesco in Kensington, near the tube station. This would teach her to mind her own business, and also all those other godawful celebrities who have gotten to the point where they actually believe that we really give a flying **** what they think about child poverty and tibet.

She can be the first of many, after her its Dermot Gavin, then Davinda McCall, then some other eegit from one of those house hunting programs (which have really dated quickly haven't they?). As for Tesco's, they also need taking down a peg or two, so next time you go there, make sure and bring some caterpillars and put them in the cabbage section. Get all your friends to do likewise, money grabbing SOBs. We'll give them a goddamn "credit crunch" right between the legs.

Nothing at all, you must laugh more often. If you are finding it hard to laugh at the cartoons, you should wait outside some large large financial institution or mortgage brokerage until some of the whizz-kid hot shot, former masters of the universe come out all worried looking, just point and start laughing at them hilariously shouting, heh hah!". They know what they did.

I am not sure if there are more gays now than previously, perhaps its just that more survive into adulthood without being murdered by guys wearing check shirts and cowboy boots. I dunno, more research needs to be done on that one.

I have been thinking to myself, "The party's over." Now is the time when we must begin to pay the piper. For the over-indulgence, for the waste, for what we have been taking for granted all these years.

I am glad to hear it, thats what I feel, but I think that I might as well extract the comedy element from this feeling, as lets face it, I might worry about the world in an abstract sense, but it sure doesn't worry about me, and essentially my long term future will be as plant food so thats about all I amount to in the crazy hill of beans.

That said though, I personally am annoyed that after all the good science fiction films that were made, the actual future is turning out to be a slow, boring version of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome meets Waterworld, and they both sucked as movies.

On a serious note, yes, forget about the worlds problems. Have fun, enjoy spring.

Take a trip, have a one night stand then allow it to turn into love.

Go to the movies, laugh out loud, be silly, wear something that will make people smile.

Lend a hand to a stranger, then enjoy the feeling that washes over you.

Rent a speedboat for a day, write a letter and send it to someone you admire, make their day.

Live your life as if it will end soon.

Go get em tiger......

Go on.

Capital advice, you see, "there may be trouble ahead, but while the music and laughter and fun, and romance, lets face the music and dance" ;) I bet all those survivalist people are having an "I told you so" moment in their shelters up the mountains, lets bomb them just to teach them a lesson for trying to prepare for stuff, if we are going down they are coming with us, thats my message.

Actually, I have a thing for Irishmen at the moment. I just finished watching a movie with a couple of really hot Irishmen in it, and I'm wondering just now what Dr. Galbally looks like. :sneaky:

Yes, it seems like I am taping into a vein of disquiet with my ramblings about this crazy world, I'm glad that I have touched a nerve. Also, in terms of liking Irishmen, thats something I am always in favour of. These hot Irishmen were they hot because they were sexually attractive, or physically hot because they were in the desert or something? We don't like hot weather as we are so used to rain you see. I can make no comment on what I look like, other than to say I am definetly a human man, from Ireland. But getting away from my personal appearance, what we need to do is come up with some good news, and some thing to occupy ourselves while the whole thing goes up in flames, now obvious sex is a great way to occupy yourself, but you can't do that all the time, as you need to eat, and pay some bills.

Didn't the Greeks, The Romans, The Egyptians, The folks from the Middle Ages, The Victorians, all come to a point when they mourned the end of an era? Well, the world didn't end.................it just evolved and changed.

Well for the Greeks and the Romans, the world they knew ended pretty definitively, and the Victorian English were masters of the world in 1890, much more direct power than even the US has now, but it was all gone up in smoke by 1918. Though England is still there of course, but its not a place any Victorian would recognize, and I don't just mean the architecture. But of course the world will go on, one way or another, though it might not end up being the world we recognize. I just feel its definetly an "end of era" kinda thing, you can feel it, big wheels are turning, and we are just rolling along on them, but change isn't always necessarily bad, I am just worried because I think the things I am used to are changing very rapidly, whether thats true or not, of course only time will really tell.

Hi, Galbally!

Whenever someone says, "Is it me?" I am keenly tempted to say, "Yes, it is you. Stop it!" (As in "Is it me, or is it hot in here?", to which I reply, "Yes it is you, and stop it because you're making me hot too.")

I think it is useful to observe that the world being up sh+t creek is the usual state of affairs. Whenever things are really smashing, it's usually a bubble. The great thing about times like these is that we don't have to worry about when it will end-we can look forward to it. Actually, if we compare now to most of human history, this is an incredibly great time to be alive! (in most of the civilized world that is)

In the past, the media (at least where I live) has been good at stirring people up, but it usually isn't as bad as they would have us to believe, a lot of drama and hype. I can't imagine that they've changed much, but like I said, I don't tune in anymore.

You mean we were just a diversion for you, oh damn, I was getting excited and all, dang. It could have been great baby, now I am just gonna have to find someone else for my end of the world fun, (which probably won't actually be the end of the world, but the fun will be good). ;)

Yeah I know, I know, I've read St Augustine, and he kinda lived at the end of his world, and his take on the whole thing was "hey, get over it, whatta you expecta eh?" People always feel like they are at some kind of end point in history, but annoyingly history goes on. Now there are a couple of things in our own times that are unprecedented, the climate is one of them of course, and to be honest at the current rate, it really is gonna do for the lot of us, and I know that better than most as I'm a scientist, but the bomb is still there as well, waiting paitiently for the right times to develop, and that would also most certainly do for us as well. :-2

Like you said though, mustn't grumble, my main problem is how to have more sex before the whole thing kicks off, perhaps I should start one of those stupid UFO cults and perseude guillible eegits to give me all their money to build the mother ship? Like you said, these are good times to be alive (well if you are a North American or Western European they are), though the quality of Rock Music has slipped drastically in recent years, so thats a negative.

Dear Galbally,

Yes, the world is up a creek without a paddle.

Today I posted about a Czech boy who was caged, partially skinned and fed to relatives. http://www.forumgarden.com/forums/showt ... =38079What the hell are we supposed to do with that? How can we get perspective on something so bizarre and horrid? Can you help me come to terms with this one?

No, its mind boggling, this is why philosophies based on the idea that human beings are nice decent creatures by default always fail, human beings are not very nice really, and they need a lot of watching or things quickly get out of hand. Its best not to dwell on this particular horrible cases though, as such extreme depravity is thankfully quite rare, its the everyday crap that gets most of us down.

Yes, and with the price of fuel these days, the chances of getting cheap flights to see each other for a bit of nookie are getting dimmer by the day. Which is a shame, because I am quite frisky. We always score well on the international love table us Irish lads (its the accents you see). Oh well, what can you do? You'll just have to make do with some American heart throb. :-4

You are a very wise man (in my opinion).

Thank you, I shall try to resist being disarmed by your gracious flattery though, as it will just go to my head and then I will lose any wisdom I may once have had. :wah:

Yes, we also have problems with people eating too many chocolate biscuits, but I don't think its as bad as over there quite yet. Yes, well if you are over in Ireland and you feel like a bit of slap and tickle do drop by for tea and crumpet. ;)

But is that in a good way or a bad way?

Any news from the end of the world?

Great, then the end of the world doesn't seem so bad.

Well, our economy is now crashing in Ireland as well, so all the rich and fancy people are running around in circles shouting "negative equity", and "inflation, inflation"; as it seems they are preturbed by the idea that everything has gone wrong (again). I say 3 next big things, will be art, socialism, and religion, as they are all diversionary pastimes during a recession. ;)

Laziness...

Laziness is the worlds problem...

It all starts from family values and those who feel it's not worth it to instill little lessons in life that act as foresight for moral virtue...

We the world don't consist of only "Americans", "British", "Germans, or "Chinese"...The world consists of human beings and the locality of their governments makes it obvious that not everyone is treated equal because of laziness in that "I have all I need...If he doesn't have anything that's his problem"...Which is selfish to no end and increases along with population...It's the population that grows without these moral obligations until it gets to the point people are asking whether or not the world is going to make it...

It doesn't get any more simple than to treat your neighbor as if he were your brother because he very well may be and that it begins with "you"...Make sure it doesn't end with "you"...

And then everyone will run off to Dubai's Palm Tree Islands and live happily ever after...

The problem is that the economic systems we have are insane, but its the one that best reflects the truth of human nature and what we are all really about in this life, and every once in a while this happens, because the people who run the show think they have re-invented the law of gravity, but they haven't of course, it will be the little people who will go to the wall, but thats what they get for being the little people, fear and greed, fear and greed. One day we shall realize that we can't eat money, like the indians say, perhaps that day is closer than we realize.

You seem to emphasis more on the ego of the powerful whereas myself think the world is much too greedy for it's own good...

I would have to say both is the problem...As far as one being more than the other I really wouldn't hold an argument...The fact of the matter is is that people have no integrity...At least that's my observation...
