well i should have put this into 'missing children'/ Amber Alert, she is only 17..........

RICHMOND, Va. — Police found the car of missing 17-year-old Taylor Behl on Saturday parked not far from her dorm room at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where the freshman was last seen nearly two weeks ago.

An off-duty Richmond police officer discovered the abandoned vehicle about 1.5 miles from the school. The car's Virginia plates had been replaced with Ohio tags that had been reported stolen. Police put it under surveillance but finally impounded the car Saturday night after no one approached the vehicle for more than 12 hours.

A dog team was brought in to try to pick up a scent and the FBI has begun a forensics investigation. Police have said there is no evidence of foul play surrounding Behl's disappearance, but last week they shifted their search from a missing-persons case to a criminal investigation, citing the fact that Behl is a juvenile and has been missing for an extended period of time without being in contact with anyone.

Friends, classmates and family have put up posters featuring the smiling Behl around campus and have created the Web site friendsoftaylor.com. She is described as being 5-foot-6 and 135 pounds with light-brown hair, brown eyes and piercings in her ears and nose.

What an extraordinary post. Do you ask because you know, or do you ask thinking that someone on the site might know and not be telling, or do you ask thinking that someone on the site might be very skilled at googling?

You're the expert in missing persons. We're delighted to have experts but frustrated by rhetorical questions.

I looked at the US national Ambert Alert system last year. It had handled over 200 alerts of which only 34, if I remember right, were stranger incidents, all the rest involved family of whom fewer than one in ten harmed the "missing" (Amber Alert's term) child. I was deeply unimpressed. It stank of reasssuring the public that something was being done about a real problem and the underlying truth was that it wasn't, that the Amber Alerts are a hugely-publicized panacea which excite the media and entertain the public but leave practically untouched the thousands of real cases of endangered missing people. In the majority of cases Amber Alerts are a combination of an out-of-control domestic dispute and a police officer who wants the local TV team to interview him. Perhaps, as an expert, you have a view you'd like to express.

And what happened to Taylor Behl?Cohen detailed the case of Taylor Behl, a 17-year-old Virginia Commonwealth University freshman who went missing in September 2005. She was killed by Benjamin Fawley, a man she met offline but developed a relationship with on MySpace, he said. This case marked one of the first times that police narrowed down their suspect pool using a MySpace friends list, Cohen said. Fawley, then 38, stuck out from the others because he was not an "age-appropriate" friend for Behl, Cohen said.

Fawley's Internet footprint eventually led police to Behl's body, hastily buried near a lake, Cohen said. Fawley was convicted in August 2006 of her murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
