I have a nice new shiny laptop but can't get it to connect to internet. It won't pick up my wireless connection for some reason, keeps saying wlan not enabled, yet I've followed all the instructions.

Is anything else using the wireless router? If it's not you might factory-reset it and remake the connections from scratch.

There's a painful set of decisions to make and once they're made at the router end they have to be mirrored on the laptop.

The router needs an administrative password. Set it and write it down.

You need to choose what security pattern to adopt. It's from a selection of encrypted wireless (WEP or WAP variations) and MAC address lists which say yes, your laptop's on my list, I'll allow you through.

If you set a WEP or WAP password you'll need to key the same WEP or WAP settings and password into the laptop (or use the auto-install from the instructions if your router and laptop use them).

Then - I told you it was complicated - you need to open the router for the protocols you want your laptop to access. By default you can browse and get email, maybe that's enough.

I hate wireless connections. And bluetooth, come to that. I like wires. Why not use a wire?

So sorry about that Betty. This is my first laptop and I had someone from Dell install everything. I'm still having problems with it...can't locate the wireless mouse and doesn' shut down properly. When I have more time next week I'm having my tekkie guy come back.

Spot...I hate wires. I love to take my laptop everywhere with me and ya can't do that with a desktop puter:p

But but but Spot the idea is for it all to be wireless, ease of use and all that. I've followed all instructions but the damn thing won't pick up any signals. it definately states that the wlan is not activated, the switch is on at the front but no light is showing and the option to activate the wlan setting won't let me click on it. Its meant to be simple for gods sake :wah: Everyone else I know with a laptop comes here and just links up to my wireless - simple!

I think what I had in mind was that when at the home base I'd always plug in a wire to get as good a connection as possible, though when out on the road I'd use a wireless connection as the only option available. I've always done it that way. I've never had a wireless keyboard, or mouse either, for the same reason. Predictable reliable maximal efficiency, that's what attracts me.

They lied through their gritted teeth then. Take it to their desk and ask them to call up the local network selection screen for you, and watch them squirm. Your laptop has no wireless card installed. I expect their weasel words were that it's Wireless Capable or Wireless Ready, which means it has no wireless card installed.

Did you try it with a wire yet?

It would, it would. Very pretty and yes, it's got a wireless card installed. I'll download the manual and see why you're not getting lit up. You've got an Intel Core2 Duo, you animal, I've never even dreamed of having anything that glamorous.

It is rather nice lol when I originally turned her on she lit up, but not a lot since then, I even tried a system restore incase in the initial fire up and fiddle around we'd done something. On firing up after restore the light came on and then promptly went out again. I've been through the user manual step by step and just can't understand why it won't work.

Well, you've got as much info as I have now in that case - there it is on page 60: Turn on the WIRELESS or WIRELESS LAN switch. The WIRELESS LAN indicator lights up.

And yours didn't any longer.

You need the salesman in front of you, and the manual open at page 60, and get him to do it and if he can't to give you a replacement new box from stock. You did a restore back to the earliest available?

Yes I did, and it really should be as simple as that shouldn't it!! Damned annoying! Thanks for looking Spot, fingers crossed will sort it soon!

I'm pretty sure it must be operator error because it says straight out that it is 'Simple, casual and smart'.... that's a direct quote missy!:wah:

Betty Boop it still has to be ENABLED. Do you see the wireless icon in your toolbar? Right click on it and select enable. then you double click on it and open it up you can then set you your WLan from there. You will need a WEP address and a 9 or 10 didit code then you should be able to connect. Sometime on laptops you can connect through the widows wireless network setup as well.

I have attached a picture of my Local network setting that I have right clicked on, as you can see if I select disable it will be gone, then you just select enable and bingo it should be there for you.
