Question for IT experts

Post by gmc »

I have a reasonably powerful computer, athlon 64x2 dual core 3800+ 2 gb of memory.

every now and then-like hust now, when I'm on the internet with maybe two or three windows open things start to run slow if I open another window. when check the processor use is 64% plus. Sometimes I will have fourteen or more applications open at one time and even when scanning documents as well the power use hardly ever gets near maximum. No other programmes are running in the background and I have anti-virus and privacy software installed.

What's happening? Is it just some sites take a lot of power to load up or is something else going on like someone trying to hack in? I don't keep confidential information, like passwords or bank details on it anyway and client files are on separate hard drives so I would see if they are being accessed and would be bugger all use to anyone anyway.

Am I being paranoid?

It could be impacted by the speed of your internet connection; the fastest computer in the world will only be as good as the internet server. If a server is shared in an area, the more users on line can slow down the performance, by having multiple screens open (14?) can also add to the problem.

Some web-pages have built-in client-side programs attached, often called Javascript. These can be waywardly written and hog up processor time scooting in circles doing nothing, waiting for an event which the programmer anticipated but which has failed to eventuate. Being badly written, the more powerful your computer the faster it buzzes around doing nothing. Because your browser has immediate priority, being a graphic user application, the rogue javascript gets it too, and the combination can seriously screw up your enjoyment.

No it's something making my computer use the processor. It's not just slow downloading at the evening rush hour as it were.

for instance I'll usually open several threads on the garden -flick through and open the interesting looking ones. I've got four open just now. Workwise I'm usually using several applications at once.

ALOHA!!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"
