Suicide Bombers
So according to Scotland Yard all four London bombs were the work of suicide bombers. Three of the men have been identified and are aged between 19-22 and come from the Leeds area. All three were born here and as far as the police are aware have never been outside the UK.
So there hatred and justification for this act was nurtured in the country they called home. perhaps this may influence some of those who opposed the holding of terror suspects without trial and the granting of entry to radical clerics who wish to enter this country (can't remember the name but one is all over the press today).
Several Muslim leaders have been all over the media in the last few days pleading for calm, two that I saw on the BBC news and Newsnight had to admit that it is lilely that these young men had been indoctrinated by radical islamic preachers.
The fact that these were suicide bombers brings a whole new dimension to the terror campaign, if you don't have to plan an escape route then your task becomes half as difficult.

It's very dreadful that anyone in this country should become so stirred up with frustration and anger that they feel violence is their only recourse. That they should get that way over a political decision is even sadder. It doesn't make the original political decision any more or less correct that this reaction happened.
I'm not sure how you re-bottle the genie, and cut the anger back. The policing is going to have to get more intrusive and more costly. I'm sure it will be done with sufficient professionalism that it doesn't add further to the anger, that's one positive thought.

Methinks some of the British muslim community have been too slow to condemn their more radical brethern. On the other hand there are plenty white folks who want to stir up hatred as well. I see a hindu temple has been attacked-racists are not the brightest match in the box. Fundamentalist christians are just as bad imo.
In Northern Ireland we have protestant killing catholic and vice versa. We have the media banging on about eastern european immigrants as well. I have strong objections to being dragged in to someone elses religious war.

I would suggest not reply in kind, hate with hate just leads to more of the same.
To paraphrase Ghandi, if you practice an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth all you end up with is a load of blind people with no teeth. Demonising an entire community is exactly what this act is intended to do. These Terrorists want hate and dissension that is their purpose. Personally I don't want a police state no matter what the reason. Not all asians in this country are muslim, OK sikhs wear bandages on their heads but apart from that I can't tell hindu from muslim. No one wanted to kick out all those of Irish extraction because of the IRA.
I don't blame Bush and Blair for this nor for the acts of the terrorists, only they are to blame, but I think they have thrown fuel to the fire by invading Iraq and are gaining support for a bunch of nutters.

These nut cases were blowing themselves up in Israel long before Iraq was invaded. Do you think these Muslim groups have formed and trained in the U.S. and Britain in the same amount of time we’ve been in Iraq? No. They have been embedded in our neighborhoods for a lot longer than that. The invasion of Iraq came after the 9/11 homicide bombings not before. These murderous thugs have been planning these killings for a long time. No one can say for sure if they are doing more or less now than they have been planning for decades. You can’t convince me they didn’t expect retaliation after 9/11. They are cold hearted murderers. That doesn’t mean they are stupid.

In Israel, people have been far more powerless and annoyed for far longer than in Yorkshire. It is a huge step backward, that these feelings have spread as far as England.

What we see in England is what we see in the U.S., is what we see in Israel. Radical Islamists are seeking to wipe out freedom and any religion or culture save their own brand of Islam. It is really that simple at its core.

BTW I like the new halo.So long as "Radical Islamists" refers to a hard core minority extremist bunch within a broader Muslim setting then yes, it really is that simple. There's very few in the Christian religious community who are their counterpart, I'm pleased to say. Not in this generation. There have been in the past, of course. Perhaps these movements go in waves.

It's an interesting estimate. It puts the lunatic fringe at very roughly one Muslim in every five thousand.

We had a number of incidents in the UK related to sectarian injustices in Ireland. Few people at the time felt it helpful to blame Roman Catholicism for the violence, nor Christianity in general. The fire that upheld the IRA was, nonetheless, quite evidently centered in the minority Roman Catholic community. If you look for "Catholic terrorism" in discussions over the last forty years, you'll find precious little of it anywhere. "Islamic terrorism" is just as unhelpful. While it's true that there are Radical Islamists who wish to expand their influence over the entire planet, I'm sure they're not the driving force of these people from Leeds. I'm sure that, as the UK government dossier quoted in the Sunday Times article explicitly states, their trigger was the presence of Western forces in the Middle East, and their background one of impotent sympathy with the Palestinians.

I suspect that the trigger for one of them certainly would have been the education he recieved at a religious school in Lahore. I very much doubt that the majority of muslims in this country give a toss about palestine, even the so called hardliners. I may have missed the whole point here but is Bin Laden's creed not world wide Jihad, it's that simple, countries, territories, borders he cares not, he has convienently boiled down the message to them or us, now that is a far more stirring message to young impressionable muslims than ahving to study the palestinian situation and middle east history.
I was rathger impressed by Mr Blair yesterday and would hope that the security services would be more proactive and start to take the fight to the terrorists, a difficult job I agree.

That's a very interesting alternative point of view, Bothwell. It disagrees with the Home Office assessment, the Foreign Office assessment, and the Spot assessment, but who knows, you may have your finger on the pulse of Muslim youth after all, and just not mentioned your preferences in the past.

Well that is the point of these discussions is it not. It is my personal point of view. The experiences I have had in the past with our own homegrown terrorists was that they had long lost sight of the actual history they were supposed to be inspired by and had been indoctrinated deeply enough to distill it to a hatred of the British, in fact several of them that I came acroos a fairly close quarters had little or no idea about the principals that had shaped them.
Of course it could all be absolute B******s but all I can do is use my own experiences and opinions. Given recent figures from the Home Office regarding for example the number of missing asylum seekers I am not sure they are a particularly reliable source. As for the Foreign Office I believe they may also had some involvment in the WMD dossier, so take your pick.

We are not going to appease them or negotiate with them to get them to stop. It simply isn’t going to happen. So, we need to begin focusing on how to stop them. How are we going to capture them or kill them before they take more innocent lives? I’m getting weary of all the criticism and Monday morning quarterbacking (mine included). We know we have a problem and it doesn’t take a lot of defining. What is the solution?

Violence is NEVER a "recourse". It's an unacceptable answer, always. Ghandi was angry, very angry, yet he toppled the Indian / British empire without a shot being fired.
That they should get that way over a political decision is even sadder.
It's not sad at all. It's psychotic. To decriminalize and soften the act by saying it's "sad" is an equal crime.

Radical Islamists are EXACTLY like Nazi Fascists, and Tyrannical Khmer Rouge Killers. Our way and death to everybody who doesn't like it.
Their ideal of the world would include death camps, conversion re-education camps, and killing fields carpeted with dead and stinking bodies. In the end, there would only be a few "Isalmic Elite" and the rest of the world would be enslaved. What was left of it that is.

Just where do you think they got the idea that blowing themselves up, along with dozens of innocent men, women, and children, was a way to get their idea across? From Radical Islamic Imams, that's where! At this rate, it's only a matter of time before Islam is outlawed as a religion worldwide. The sooner the better, I say.

This is uninformed provocation. Where they got the idea from is surely the Hamas precedent. If you stand up and protest, you get killed. If you sneak in and destroy a few innocents, you get killed. Only in the second instance do you also get noticed.

ROFL...out of context that was a poorly worded sentence! Funny how it sounds good in your head, but is meaningless in type!
What I was trying to say is that the world united to stop the genocidal maniac Hitler, a man and a government that was dedicated to annihilating everyone who did not think their way.
Radical Islamic fundamentalists are dedicated to the same goal. Extermination of all who do not believe as they do.
The countries of the planet should, and largely are, uniting to defeat this totalitarian evil.

The countries of the planet should, and largely are, uniting to defeat this totalitarian evil.If you believe that, you are a deluded man. Whether self-deluded, or systematically deluded, I can't tell, though I suspect the former.
It isn't meaningless in type at all. You can leave it in your will for your epitaph, it looks coherent enough.
Defeating Hitler wasn't an exercise in extermination. The parity of your expressions, the mirror-nature of them, is uncanny. You also seem dedicated to the same goal. Extermination of all who do not believe as you do. The great evil here is the means you propose. I think you've gone past the point of functioning rationally, in this thread. You need to stand clear and read it later.

When flower power came along I stood for Human Rights, marched around for peace and freedom, had some nooky every night - we took it serious.

Wow, Spot, you may have hit on something critical. Satire is helpful. But not only that, perhaps the less radical Muslim are not condemning the radicals for similar reasons. Maybe it just hits too close to home.

Maybe it just hits too close to home.I think you'll find, if you look, that the less radical Muslim are condemning the radicals. You've looked, presumably? Whether the reasons are similar or not, I don't claim to know. I notice that, for example, that Zaki Badawi, the chairman of the British Council of Mosques, was prevented from entering the United States after flying into New York on Wednesday. ' Dr Badawi, who has been awarded an honorary knighthood and attended a state banquet at Buckingham Palace for President Bush’s visit, said: “The people I was speaking to were very junior people, and just executing things they were told. They were very very embarrassed and I felt sorry for them.†' Last Sunday Dr Badawi joined other British religious leaders at Lambeth Palace to condemn the London bombings.
You want another example? Yusuf Islam, the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, was ejected from the US without explanation last September.
Who needs satire?

Unfortunately, the press here seem to be more interested in making Bush look bad. Stories such as this almost never get the air time they deserve. I'll try to find where the NY times buried them, if they published them at all.

They may be condemming them but what are they doing about it?

At the time of this post, I hadn't "looked." I expect anything as important as this to be broadcast from the mountaintops, if for no other reason than to stop the conservative tendency to lump all Muslim into the radical category.
Well the information's out there, and I'm surprised and disappointed it hasn't been shoved down my metaphorical throat, like Tom Cruise' religious zealotry and other such tripe.
Muslim Wake Up (www.muslimwakeup.com) is one newsletter I've subscribed to, thanks to you, Spot.
