Terror in London
Leaked No 10 dossier reveals Al-Qaeda’s British recruits
ROBERT WINNETT AND DAVID LEPPARD
Read the document: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
AL-QAEDA is secretly recruiting affluent, middle-class Muslims in British universities and colleges to carry out terrorist attacks in this country, leaked Whitehall documents reveal.
A network of “extremist recruiters†is circulating on campuses targeting people with “technical and professional qualificationsâ€, particularly engineering and IT degrees.
Yesterday it emerged that last week’s London bombings were a sophisticated attack with all the devices detonating on the Underground within 50 seconds of each other. The police believe those behind the outrage may be home-grown British terrorists with no criminal backgrounds and possessing technical expertise.

This makes me wonder about universities all over the world.

This is hardly news. Surely you don't fall for the idea that all terrorists are thick uneducated peasants? Most of the 911 terrorists were highly educated. Educational establishments have always been the home of radicalism down throughout the ages. It was always one of the reasons put forward for not educating the general populace as it encourages dissent. One of the main engines of the protestant reformation and all it read to was the printing of the bible in native tongues. Once people could read it for themselves they started questioning the status quo.

Dissent is one thing. This is quite another.
I’ve never had the illusion that the murderers were uneducated hicks. It just never really registered in my mind that the universities were their recruiting grounds. It makes all kinds of sense now, particularly in view of the protests against legitimate military recruitment on the campuses. I guess the sophistication is a bit of a surprise to me, even though it was there in plain sight the whole time.

Was trying to think how to phrase this without appearing deliberately antagonistic. Hopefully you have read enough of my posts to appreciate that is not the intention.

Surely you don't think that objection to military recruitment on campus is as the result of muslim agitation? It kind of suggests that any opposition to the war is being taken as being anti american and the result of people being manipulated. Which claim you could claim about those supporting it. I have an impression from some reports I have read and also some of the posts on this forum that many americans see anti war protest as unpatriotic. It has strong echoes of vietnam.
As to British universities political discussion has always been heated and often anti-establishment. UK attitudes to the military are ambivalent, intensely proud but hostile to anything that smacks of militarism or jingoism. My country right or wrong just does not compute.

Not totally but it sure leads me to think that some of it could be the result of Radical Muslim activity. In light of their sophistication, why wouldn’t it be?
I’m not thinking in terms of British Universities only. I’m really thinking in terms of U.S. institutions.
I view anti-war protests with a great deal of concern. I sincerely have to wonder whose side the protesters are on.
They effectively caused the U.S. to lose the Vietnam War. I have no doubt that the enemies of freedom learned that lesson well and see our freedom as an excellent tool to use against us. Those who are protesting should ask themselves who’s cause they are really helping. They should wonder if they are being manipulated for the enemies cause.

I view protests with a great deal of affection, it's the sign of a healthy democracy when the govt knows it had better tolerate dissension.

In general those who object to demonstrations should ask what would they protest about. To sit and just agree with what you are told without question is not the action of a free citizen sometimes you need someone yelling that's a load of bollocks.
There were 220,000 people demonstrating in edinburgh on the saturday of the G8 summit. But what gets all the attention is a few stupid idiots that want to riot. Cameras at the ready the media are there to record every detail never mind the many thouands more who were behaving peacefully. The twits actually severely curtailed a mass demonstration at gleneagles by closing the motorway so the busloads of demonstrators couldn't get there.
On the other hand it was really annoying for those like myself who got held up in it. If you are going to cause disruption annoy the politicians not everybody else.

Wow! I'll bet that was quite a party in Edinburgh. Did anybody change thier mind because you were there?
If people go to the poles and vote it doesn’t disrupt anything. That is the sign of a healthy democracy. It isn’t a sign of health when those who lose at the poles take to the streets.
If people don’t like the administration's war policy, they should use system in place to get rid of the administration.
Granted, you have a right to protest and I don't want you to lose that right. I just happen to think that not everything we have the right to do is good for us.
