Canada Declaring Plastic Chemical Toxic

Post by koan »

Supposedly we are doing this tomorrow. :D

It's rare to read the news in so many papers before it happens.

OTTAWA — The Canadian government is said to be ready to declare as toxic a chemical widely used in plastics for baby bottles, beverage and food containers as well as linings in food cans.

A person with knowledge of the government’s chemical review program spoke on the condition he not be named because of a confidentiality agreement. He said the staff work to list the compound, called bisphenol-a, or B.P.A., as a toxic chemical was complete and was recently endorsed by a panel of outside scientists.

A public announcement by Health Canada may come as early as Wednesday but could be delayed until the end of May. Canada would be the first country to make a health finding against B.P.A., which has been shown to disrupt the hormonal systems of animals. The department’s decision was first reported in The Globe and Mail, a Toronto newspaper, on Tuesday.

Hard to believe that a bunch of atavistic scumbags in the hip pocket of Big Business like Harper's Conservatives would take such a bold step.

Whether it gets banned or not, three of Canada's largest retailers(Canadian Tire, Forzani Group Ltd., Hudson's Bay Company) have pulled bisphenol A bottles from their shelves, so it's effectively off the market for products that hold food or drink.

Good thing, too.

There are so many products that use that component. I've read that major chains are prepared to pull them. The scariest of the banned products, if this goes into effect, is baby bottles. We're about to admit that the bottles people have been microwaving baby formula in are toxic when heated.

There were formerly all kinds of theories into why children are maturing so fast. One of my daughters classmates got her period when she was 8. Wonder if she was bottle fed.

You're seriously implying that our children's bodies are developing breasts and starting their menses early because of what they watch on tv?

I think it is the high fat content of the western diet as well, bringing on a sense of establishment and safety for the body to respond for sexual development to start for early childbearing

Chances are the meat on the kids' plates are full of growth hormone.

That, and the ability of bisphenol A and other common chemicals to mimic estrogen are huge factors in early puberty, frightenlng upswings in cancer cases, and marine life mutations.

There is a First Nations reserve near Sarnia, Ontario (a major petrochemical centre) where the great majority of children are girls.
