Once we have discerned the "Words of God" within the very human words of the Bible the truths that it teaches can be trusted. It is not and was never intended to be an historical account. It was a religious document. IT is written in midrash from cover to cover and this makes a great deal of us of metaphor.
It takes a bit of studying to understand. For instance the Pentateuch, which was not written by Moses but compiled from several oral stories during the Babylonian Exile. The Bible is composed of myth, legend, folk tale, poetry, short story, fiction, philosophy, theology and some kernels of history spread throughout. None of this, however. negates the truths that it presents.
The Bible becomes the "Word of God" for Christians by virtue of the fact that God speaks to us through the Bible not by virtue of its authorship.
Shalom

The Bible was never intended to be a substitute for scientific writings. The Bible is a religious book not a science book nor was it ever intended to be.. If you want scientific answers then you had better be prepared to try to understand science and seek assistance if necessary.

"Can the Bible be trusted?"
This is not an easily answered question. Trusted how? Trusted for what?. It can be trusted to present profound truths about man and God and Yeshua of Nazareth and the Holy Spirit. It cannot be trusted as a science book or a history book. It cannot be trusted to answer to all of todays problems which were unknown back in ancient times. It like all of us has its limitations.

You won’t find instructions on how to fix a toaster or send a rocket into space in the Bible. What you will find…if you look and seek God’s wisdom as you do…are the answers you need for living.
When someone says the Bible doesn’t have the answers, they paint themselves into a corner. If the Bible does provide the answers to living they have to find an argument that protects their position. Beware of people who have to have the last word.
If I can’t point to the answer in the Bible, it is most likely because I don’t know where it is yet or I don’t recognize it. It isn’t a shortcoming of God’s writing. It is mankind’s shortcoming for not being able to understand. Many scholars are wonderful and they find the mysteries in God’s word but they are not deity and they don’t have all the answers.
If we are searching for life’s answers and we pray and search the Bible for those answers, we often find the answers. If we are searching for life’s answers and we don’t pray and search the Bible we are less likely to find the answers. God provides answers in many other places as well. Prayerfully seeking his answers in the events of life or in his creation can also provide answers to some of our questions. Quite often we find that without the base we get from understanding God through his word, we wouldn’t recognize his answers when they come from other sources.
Skittles, the Bible can be trusted. Read it with a believing heart, assisted by the Writer’s spirit and leave the doubting to those who rely on their own understanding. I have relied on its author and his words have never let me down. There is more in the Bible than we can absorb in a lifetime, no matter how smart we are. Dig in and explore the treasures it holds. They are endless and with the help of the Author’s spirit they will guide you through this lifetime and beyond.

I am wondering what problems we have today which were unknown in ancient times. Are human problems not to be experienced by all peoples everywhere at all times? We all experience heartache, sickness, dissapointment, injury, death, and all the struggles which life on this mortal world brings. However apart from these, many of our problems stem from our refusal to live our lives as God would have us do. Hence crime, wars, broken marraiges, drunkeness, drug problems, etc. etc. These things are timeless. In the final analysis perhaps ALL our problems are the result of our not following Gods laws.

I've found alot of comfort and knowledge from the Bible. I teach my kids to look to it as well. I also think man should continue to explore ourselves and our origins at the same time. Hardliners of all religions make a mistake by thinking the Bible is the end of our search for truth. It wasn't meant to stop us in our tracks, but to guide us along the way.

It seems to me the Bible either does not have the answers to all of our questions or in some cases we don't want to listen to the answers.
I will deal with the first. The Bible makes no reference to geneitic engineering, (not know of at that time. It does not answer the questions that arise today around the ability of our medical profession to use life support systems even if the individual is brain dead like that gal down in the states. It does not anwer the question of Divorce for our modern age (I know what Jesus said but he said it at that time because of the way women were being treated). The Bible does not answer the question regarding contraception (though the RC Church has given its own take on the issue. It does not answer the questions surrounding the utilization of nuclear energy for either peaceful or armed purposes. The Bible does not answer questions regarding illnesses (mental illness was though of as demon posession). The Bible does not tell us what to do in the case of Robert Latimer). The Bible does not tell us how to respond to war situations where we know that if caught our families will be tortured beyond belief before being killed.
I could go on but I think most will get the message.
NOw to the other part. We as a human race are destroying mother earth and consequently ourselves. The Bible either does not answer to that question of folks don't pay attention to the answer. (I happen to believe that it does have the answer) but the human race places economics before the very survival of the human race. I have here or on another thread argued the issue of global warming and have been castigated for it. However, it is now recognized by thousands of scientists around the world and recently by the UN (which the US will likely ignore because to react would damage its economy; though they won't need an economy in the future). NASA recently admitted that they now had the proof desired. The Bible does not tell us what to do when in the world the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer (something Jesus opposed 2000 or so years ago)
We as humans are raping the earth and destroying it so that the great multinationals and the powerful countries can have their economy which won't do them any good when the world collapses around their ears.
Yes the Bible has much wisdom to present. It also has much truth to present. However, it too is limited just as man is limited. If anyone thinks not then I would suggest that as per Philips Book "Your God is Too Small".

There is only one God. "Hear of Israel the Lord your God. The Lord your God is one.
If you do some research into the other great faiths of the world you will find that each believes in only one God; The only God. Oh they may call him by different names: God, Yahweh, Elohim, Allah, the Great Spirit etc. However, they are all referring to the one God.
Some readings in the Qu'ran and the Vedas, the Baghava Gita, the writings of Buddha, the sacred scriptures of Taoism, the First Nations of North America will show this clearly.
The different names are purely the result of culture and nothing more.
All of the great faiths are founded upon the one spirituality that is behind all faiths- the Divinity that created and is still creating the cosmos and all that is in it. When we finally come to learn this we will be able to establish some authentic communications between each other and come to know each other better and perhaps, just perhaps bring about the world peace that the Prince of Peace brought with Him.

It was always my belief from childhood that God - no matter what religious belief had for her name, must be the same worldwide. Why would every culture have a belief in a divine being or even a combination of divine beings? The original religions believed their divine beings to be the forces of nature.
I agree with you in the spirit of a need for humans to have a force greater than themselves. The need to not have our life end in the natural cycle is only something a human can need. Why does there have to be something after death? I am still out on the source of the origin of the universe. I am very grounded in science and don't see this science happening in my lifetime.

The theology of something after death has been around for thousands of years. It is something that most faiths have. The Buddhists of course don't call it heaven but a return to the source (God). It seems to me that it is something that God has instilled in us. Jesus himself had the same belief. As to why. Who knows the mind of the Divine.
As for death that has been a part of life since man began and in fact long before man began. It is part of the life cycle. Most people of faith accept and believe in this life after. We call it life and some try to describe this place. What most modern theologians believe is that we are called into a new state of being with new beginnings and that this heave in a state of being within God.
Death is not the result of the "original sin" of the mythical Adam and Eve. It was created in us by the creator and who knows the mind of God.
BTW I have no problem identifying with the fiminine side of God or referring to God as she. After all, any words we use to describe or define the Divine are always metaphor since we lack the language to do any better. At that we don't even come close.
