Vacation At Home

How many people have taken the time to explore their own state/province/region? We tend to plan getaway vacations but haven't even seen the sites or explored what our own land has to offer.

I know what you mean. We lived almost 3 years in southern England and never saw Big Ben. Northern California for 4 years and never visited Yosemite. Las Vegas for 3 years and didn't tour Hoover dam.

We're going today to visit the Japanese Tea Garden that's just been refurbished/renovated/restored or whatever the term is. The Alamo isn't the only mission in San Antonio. Actually there are several. We've visited them all.

We'll also buy season tickets to SeaWorld.

I haven't been to all the places in Texas, that I would like to go and see. I've been to the majority of the things to see here in my backyard. There's not much.

However I do drive Dave crazy when we go on trips. If I spot a historical marker sign on the side of the road, I make him stop so I can go read it.

With the price of gas going up I bet more people vacation around home more.

Of course I live in Kansas, unless you want to go on a buffalo hunt you gotta do some traveling.:wah:

It's really flat here so you can see the cops from miles away and slow down before you get a ticket.:wah:

We have Dodge City. Boot hill, um ah thats about it.:wah:

I'm in Pennsylvania and we've been to Potter County a couple of times, fun in the summer but crappy in the winter. Been to Gettysburg more than a few times to see the Civil War battlegrounds, out to Valley Forge and Chadds Ford to see the Revolutionary War battlegrounds. But I would have to agree with XGYI, the price of gas is expected to top $4.00 this summer, so I'm sticking to Ocean City, NJ for a month and everywhere I have to go down there, we can walk.

I feel very lucky to live in the British Isles - you can't walk ten feet without falling over a historical site or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Given my interests in history and distance walking, it suits me perfectly (or should that be, "I suit it"?)

After both living in Canada & Ireland I would have to say that Ireland does a much better job of promoting weekend holiday breaks within the country and abroad.

Outside the tourist season they offer great deals on family ‘3 day breaks’ where you can get two nights accommodation including breakfast and one evening meal for great prices.

At least 4 times a year I take the family off to another part of the country for a weekend break. OK Ireland as a country is not that big and takes at the most hours to get to the furthest distance from Dublin, so it is feasible compared to places like Canada where it takes 5 days to drive across it. But the concept is applicable. Why can’t you get a low cost weekend break to PEI including air fair, or to Old Quebec? It is perfectly possible.

With low cost airlines, it is revolutionising the idea of short holidays. In a few weeks, my wife is heading off to Naples in Italy with a few friends for a 3 day weekend and it only cost them â‚¬90.00 return each on the airfair.

I have been trying to re-explore my home town...even though I grew up here there are so many sites that I haven't visited since I was a kid! I have not made it out to see things as often as I would like but have made a decent effort in the past 6 months. It's been a lot of fun, I just need to make more time for it
