I am asking why does it happen to our children and what can we do about it before we turn to drugs. If I did it was in a moment of passion and I severely apologize for making such an ignorant statement.

Mental illness can be genetic... I also suffer from depression, have for most of my life when I look back... but it wasn't diagnosed until after I had my daughter, following a traumatic pregnancy and other traumatic aspects in my life... I have now been on Citalopram for 14 years, and have tried unsuccessfully a number of times to do without them...
Depression can run in families.... my grandfather committed suicide, my mother suffered with depression and also other family members have suffered too....
sometimes, just sometimes..... medication IS needed and is successful in allowing the patient to live a fairy happy life....

I was a depressed teen. I turned to drinking and drugs to a point where it's a miracle that I'm alive today. Of course it took two heart attacks to make me see that. I abused my own body to the point of my near death had it not been for medicine and doctors.
I will allow no one to force drugs on my child.
And some people won't turn to drugs and drink.. everyone's different... you really can't relate your experience to others' experiences.
No Doctor can force drugs on your child... if your child is under the age of 16, it is the decision of the parents!
On a personal note summer. While I fully understand and feel your passion, should you reply let's see if you can in a more civil manner.

Fortunately he attends a holistic school whose policy is to look at all sides of the problem and work with the parents to remedy it.

I am sorry to hear about your daughters depression. At no point have I stated that mental illness does not exist. I am asking why does it happen to our children and what can we do about it before we turn to drugs. If I did it was in a moment of passion and I severely apologize for making such an ignorant statement.

Mental illness can be genetic... I also suffer from depression, have for most of my life when I look back... but it wasn't diagnosed until after I had my daughter, following a traumatic pregnancy and other traumatic aspects in my life... I have now been on Citalopram for 14 years, and have tried unsuccessfully a number of times to do without them...
Depression can run in families.... my grandfather committed suicide, my mother suffered with depression and also other family members have suffered too....
sometimes, just sometimes..... medication IS needed and is successful in allowing the patient to live a fairy happy life....

aaww come on, JacksDad..... these cases you've listed are from all around the world..... over a number of years.... and they weren't ALL suffering with effects of anti-depressant medication, surely??
Perhaps some were suffering with undiagnosed depression... perhaps some, if they'd had the correct medication and counselling, may NOT have carried out these shootings and suicides...??

I'm confused here, Jacksdad isn't telling everyone to take their children off medication, he's just asking people to look for other ways and telling of his experiences surely.
Personally in the case of my son I'm very anti drugs right now, as frustrating as it is I'm continuing to explore other avenues first, but who knows what may happen by the time he's a teenager.
So far none of the doctors I have encountered whilst trying to get the best for my son have had any good advice to give at all, bar 'put him on ritalin'. The best people out there are the physiotherapists, the psychologists, the speech and language people. These people deal with Autistic children on a day to day basis and have some idea of what we are dealing with day in and day out. The people who bother to visit the child in their own environment, be it at home or at school.
I stopped seeing my sons Paedatrician quite some time ago, I refused to go to anymore appointments where he sat my son in a room on his own and asked him to do tasks, when my son performed them perfectly the paedatrician would announce to me 'see there is nothing wrong with him, you are being over sensitive' After four years of this I told this man where to stick his appointments and told him that he had done nothing to help my son in any way shape or form. Suddenly I got the truth, 'in his eyes' my son wasn't severe enough, he wasn't violent or a risk to others therefore he didn't warrant any help from him, he didn't fill the criteria required, the paedatrician admitted that my son was being done a dis-service by our local health authority and basically it all came down to money. :-5
So... from my point of view doctors are not there to give advice, they are there to do their job but with their hands tied behind their backs, limited resources, and offers of rewards from drug companies for writing a certain number of prescriptions per month.

The people who bother to visit the child in their own environment, be it at home or at school.
I stopped seeing my sons Paedatrician quite some time ago, I refused to go to anymore appointments where he sat my son in a room on his own and asked him to do tasks, when my son performed them perfectly the paedatrician would announce to me 'see there is nothing wrong with him, you are being over sensitive' After four years of this I told this man where to stick his appointments and told him that he had done nothing to help my son in any way shape or form. Suddenly I got the truth, 'in his eyes' my son wasn't severe enough, he wasn't violent or a risk to others therefore he didn't warrant any help from him, he didn't fill the criteria required, the paedatrician admitted that my son was being done a dis-service by our local health authority and basically it all came down to money. :-5
So... from my point of view doctors are not there to give advice, they are there to do their job but with their hands tied behind their backs, limited resources, and offers of rewards from drug companies for writing a certain number of prescriptions per month.

I'm not sure, but I think its fair to say that Pheasy and Jacksdad have been aware of one anothers circumstances for a while, I don't view that as preaching, but as one friend asking another friend to try looking at something different. The difference here is we are talking about children with ADHD/Aspergers/Autism/ADD, these children are being put on long term medication that was designed for schizophrenics, its basically a sedative. The research is not conclusive and the long term side affects are still unknown. No one could answer my questions honestly within the medical profession, if I agreed to my son going on this medication is he going to need it forever? will we need to keep upping the dose, what happens when he just can't have anymore? they can't answer these questions because they just don't know.

I think pharmacology & our current culture of violence as first resort is doing more to kill our children. GRANTED - psychology/psychiatry involves plumbing the depths of a child's or adolescents soul, causing emotionally ill-equipped young ones to cope with feelings and ideas that are difficult to process - but (in my opinion), it's when you mix cultural violence and prescriptions that alter & affect one's judgment & actions that we end up with public rage shootings. The shootings are a tragic waste of life, all the way around. I wish we could find some way to "step back" to a saner, calmer time.

When I was at school I had 3 recesses per day. I had PE at least twice a week. I was able to complete my home-work within 30 mins. I never knew of any of my peers taking drugs. I never saw any of my peers 'freaking out'. I never heard of any of my peers trying to commit suicide. I ended up with a good eduction, that didn't nearly kill me!
