The death of Justin "Paul" Byers, the brother of a soldier killed in Iraq, has been ruled a suicide, the Crawford County medical examiner said this morning.
Justin Byers, 19, of Schleswig died Monday night after he was hit by a pickup truck one mile west of Vail on U.S. Highway 30.
His brother, Sgt. Casey Byers, was killed in Iraq on June 11 when a bomb detonated under his armored Humvee. His funeral was this morning at the Iowa National Guard armory in Denison.
His remains will be inurned at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Dr. Dennis Crabb said that Justin Byers was upset about his brother's death and the fact that his military unit was scheduled to be sent to Iraq in the fall.
Justin Byers was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve transportation company of Sac City that was scheduled to leave for Iraq this fall.
Crabb said that the circumstances at the scene of the accident led officials to conclude that Justin Byers' death was an "intentional act." Crabb said no alcohol was found at the scene of the accident.
He also said there was no identification or other found items on Justin Byers' body.
A toxicology report is not yet available, he said.
